Customer Reviews:
Tokyo, Japan Cast of Evita.......2005-08-07
Recorded in 1982, this is the cast from Tokyo, Japan. The cast includes Masachika Ichimura, Akiko Kuno, and Akihiko Mitsueda. There are eleven tracks that include the following numbers: Requiem for Evita/Oh What a Circus, Buenos Aires, The Lady's Got Potential, Charity Concert/I'd be surprisingly good for you, New Argentina, Don't cry for my Argentina, High Flying Adored, Waltz for Eva and Che, Dice are Rolling, Eva's Final Broadcast, and Lament. I was surprised by the selection on this CD because the songs that they chose over others (such as "Another Suitcase in Another Hall") are not typical. Now, I don't know Japanese, so I can't comment on how good or bad the translation is- I can only comment on the orchestrations, the quality of the voices and the amount of acting in the singing.
This is a highlights CD and doesn't have half of the songs, but it's still a nice taste of the Tokyo cast. It is, of course, sung in Japanese. However, even if you do not speak Japanese at all (like me), you can still get a lot out of this CD and enjoy it thoroughly. The orchestrations are actually very good. They aren't as loud as on the English recordings, but that isn't necessarily something bad. It is very clear. The chorus is good, unline the Korean cast, which is a plus.
CHE: The Tokyo Che surprised me in "Oh What a Circus" because he is a high tenor. In some parts of the song, he almost sounded like a woman! But his voice is very good. He can actually hit the low notes too. He's just a little different. I enjoy his singing. He is very good in "The Lady's Got Potential." He has a lot of strength in his voice. You can really hear the sarcasm in his voice.
EVA: The Tokyo Eva is very good. In "Buenos Aires" she sounds almost giddy and childish, which I find to be a very neat interpretation of the character, because one would suppose that Eva would be giddy when she first came to Buenos Aires. You can hear the excitement in her voice and her enthusiasm. I find it to be a nice touch and definitely a good interpretation. You can hear how she grows up in "I'd be Surprisingly Good For you" and later songs. She is definitely worth listening to.
PERON: There's not much to the character of Peron, but he pulls off the part well. Good voice. He doesn't try to put on an annoyingly fake Spanish accent like most Perons.
