Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is Still Terrific.......2006-02-14

I still remember when I got this one, the import of Bossa Tres Jazz volume 2. This is a compilation released by Yellow Records out of France, and just like it's predecessor's in the series, it's terrific. It proved that Yellow is still into the art of putting out some unique and really thought inspiring music.

The style of this cd is very similar to the previous releases. That is, there is music here influenced by several different countries, Europe, Japan and Brazil. This one starts out with a Francois K and Barbara Mendes track that's full of energy, "Awakening". It's followed up by Muro's "Bohemian", remixed by Bah Samba. Great track, very soulful with Alice Russell leading the way! Then there's one of my favorite songs on the album, Limbo Experience's "Deepest Seas". The song just kicks in the end with keys and guitar. It's also the perfect example of why to check the linear notes - Thomas Naim of "Tom & Joyce" had a heavy hand in the cut along with several other pieces on this album as Tom & Joyce were on the Yellow Records label, I believe. Jersey Street's "It's a Beautiful Thing" is pretty sweet with a pretty nostalgic sense to it and then there's a very dreamy and rare acoustic mix to Gotan Project's "Triptico". Tom & Julie's (Julie Dexter) "Like Ours" follows up with a rase in the music too completing a sensational first 6 tracks. Other songs that made the cut to me were Blade & Masquenada Family's "Bahia", given a quiet acoustic mix and a misty cut titled "Nocturne OP 7" by Montage.

This comes highly recommended. It's really stood the test of time with me - four years later it grooves and has so many strong musicians and musical connections, it's hard to pass it by. Be on the look-out because there was a USA release of this titled "Bossa Mundo 2"... and just like Bossa Mundo, where that is the sequel to "Bossa Tres... Jazz" (black cover), Bossa Mundo 2 has a brown cover and different track selections. Actually... Bossa Mundo is like a mix of "Bossa Tres... Jazz vol 1" AND the remix project titled "More Bossa..." Reglardless, check these out and know that one of the import versions has an extra track (remix to the Francois K & Barbara Mendes cut). And if you do like this, you'll probably really enjoy Rainer Truby's "Glucklich vol 5", Brazilectro III, Brazilution 5 and "Bossa House N' Breaks" volumes 1 and 3. Oh - and try to check out Kyoto Jazz Massive's "Crossbreed" series - definitely check that one out.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant bossa-jazz of high order.......2003-03-07

Take equal parts bossa, today's dance music tempo, and unwavering sunshine, and you'll have an infallible recipe for pleasure. It's also an apt description for the bossa-meets-jazz scene flourishing the past few years. Several record labels offer consistently high quality examples (Compost, Schema) and Yellow follows suit with more uptempo fare, here a successful sequel to their 4-star Bossa Mundo from 1999.

Included among the eleven tracks are Francois K's "Awakening," a stunning eleven minute masterpiece with sublime vocals courtesy Barbara Mendes, wrapped in strings, lively percussion, and sprightly piano solo partway in. Majestic stuff, and rivaled by Muro's "Bohemian," paying homage to the great destinations of the world (and Cincinnati), and the more seductive "Deepest Seas" by Limbo Experience.

Importantly, Bossa Mundo 2 succeeds by showcasing full-on band performances, adding a depth and warmth not always found in more common computer engineered work. Welcome variety comes from the acoustic tango "Triptico" and obscure-but-not-really groups Neon Heights and Tom and Julie, receiving welcome exposure. "Oka Uja's" a bit duff, and the import has an improved track order, but minor quibbles aside, BM2 showcasing the best this scene has to offer.
