Though he's garnered a reputation of innovation and excellence in his sci-fi scores, composer Jerry Goldsmith has informed any number of other genres with his masterly writing and arranging technique. Richard Fleischer's elegiac 1971 caper affords Goldsmith the opportunity to produce an elegant, if distinctly Euro-flavored, score; perhaps a telling tribute to the widespread influence of Ennio Morricone during the period. Conversely, Blake Edward's would-be comical, if somewhat half-baked, 1971 take on the Western allows Goldsmith to again exercise his skills in a genre where his contributions have sometimes been unjustly overlooked. The composer responds with a score that combines many of the familiar expectations of genre with a Copland-esque modernism, sense of space, and dramatic drive that far outshines its cinematic inspiration. --Jerry McCulley
