5 out of 5 stars As pleasing to the ear, as it is to the eye!.......2002-06-18

Jean De Florette is the first of two foreign films based on the book by Marcel Pagnol. Composed by Jean-Claud Petit, the music that accompanies this film and the sequal is fitting and pleasing to the ear.
The film is about two men who selfishly plug a thriving spring in order to get the land that it is located on. When a tax collector, played by Gerard Depardieu, inherits the land and the home on it, he is determined to make a new life for he and his family even if he dies doing it. The sequel to Jean De Florette is Manon of the Spring, which is also as good both to the eyes and ears.
Jean-Claud Petit composed this beautiful music, known to some as the John Williams of France. In this film and in Manon of the Spring, the sequel, his music is very soothing, and almost sensual. The songs themselves tell their own story. In the title track you can hear the great Toots Thielman playing his harmonica.
Each track on the soundtrack is fit well to the scenes of the movie. When the characters are happy the music is joyful, when the characters are sad or struggling, the music feels the same way.
Jean-Claud Petit is the John Williams of our time, and is one of very few composers that can hold an audience to the movie through his music. The music adds to the beautiful scenery in France, but also holds the seriousness of the movie.
The only set-back you may have with this soundtrack is that all of the song titles are in french, so if you aren't fluent then you may have trouble deciphering the names of the songs. If you have seen this movie, you most likely will be able to tell where the songs are played.
Jean-Claud Petit has proven his great talents with this film's soundtrack, so experience this soundtrack and see how pretty the music is without the scenery!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning (eh bien, il faut acheter cette disque-ci).......1999-12-03

This soundtrack is pure magic and is worth buying for the title track alone. Stunning. Other favourites on this disc include l'Orage ('the storm') and l'Enterrement ('the funeral'). If you like it also consider buying the soundtrack of Manon des Sources ('Manon of the spring'), the sequel to this one. It is just as breathtaking and contains the full version of the theme Jean de Florette starts with.
