Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb! A Reference Recording You Just Must Have........2002-01-22

This CD is one of only two comparison references for ALL OTHER
modern versions of the selections presented here. The recordings
were made in 1961 by a "pickup orchestra" in Munich to save
money. But what an orchestra it is! Mr. George Korngold (Erich
Wolfgang Korngold's younger son) produced the original LP which
no doubt helps to account for recordings of nearly unparalleled
excellence. Buy and savor!

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment--slick packaging for lousy performances........1999-06-23

Well, too bad. I LOVE Korngold, and was looking forward to this CD. But it doesn't live up to the GOLD CD hype. The violins are shrill, and can't seem to get out of the way of their own vibrati to play in unison. Certainly Newman should have got them working off the same cam shaft. I think you're much better off with, for instance, the CD of The Sea Hawk with Charles Gerhardt conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

The one saving grace to these performances is the superior horn section. Nothing lacking there.

For contrast to this gold CD, try listening to the opening titles of rented videocassettes--for instance Korngold's own recording of King's Row is vastly superior to this rendition.

The liner notes for this CD make a big deal about the quality of the recording. But it's flat and thin. Just saying it's great doesn't make it so.

5 out of 5 stars Where have you gone, Erich Wolfgang Korngold?.......1999-03-29

I LOVE KORNGOLD!!! Where have the likes of his kind gone in today's film world? (To the bank, I guess.) BUT I NEED TRACK LISTINGS/SAMPLES FOR THIS CD! How is anyone supposed to know what Korngold gems Newman collates?! I DON'T WANT TO MISS OUT on Korngold's masterpiece "Kings Row", or his underrated and darkly profound "The Sea Wolf"!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!!!.......1999-02-15

I have been listening to film scores for almost 25 years now and this has to be one of the best. If anybody conducts Korngold better than Korngold it is Lionel Newman. The Adventures of Robin Hood has a certain gusto that most conductors would only dream of obtaining.

As far as sound quality, it is exceptional considering the recording was made in the 60's. It is such a pleasure to hear Korngold's music in stereo.

Although you can only find this on gold CD, the twice the price is more than worth it. If you're a Korngold fan, a film score fan, or just a movie fan, you have to give this CD a try.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing........1998-11-17

This is the recording I first found in a second-hand record shop. I bought it for Singapore two dollars. It was in 1974. I was 20 then.

I did not realise the beauty and importance of this recording until I got the reissued Warner Bros version about 2 years later.

The notes in the LP (it cost S$12 full price) indicated that it commanded as high as A$200. I could not appreciate the music until 5 hearings later ! By then, I was addicted to Korngold.

This year I managed to get film soundtracks by Korngold - Robin Hood, Constant Nymph, Sea Hawk and Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. It was a dream come true.

Still, Lionel Newman`s conducting is far superior to Korngold`s. Especially, the main title music to Elizabeth and Essex. It flares brilliantly. The orchestral playing is superb.

Randy and Drake from Kings Row comes off beautifully. Considering Newman`s considerable experience with film music as conductor, it is not surprising that collectors would pay so much and the gold status of the recording is well deserved.

I liked the Love theme from Robin Hood. It is lovingly played by the orchestra. Even Korngold`s version pales.

My regret is that Mr Lionel Newman did not conduct entire scores from Korngold`s repertoire.

The Constant Nymph would have been a big winner with film music fans. The original by Korngold has lovely melodies but Gerhadt`s version of the tone poem Tomorrow has drama slightly lacking in the Korngold version.

In all, this Newman version should never be deleted from the catalogue. It remains probably the finest exposition of Korngold film music in verve and nuance.
