Customer Reviews:
"We'll meet again" can be found.......2007-03-13
The reviewers critical of the "bait and switch" on Vera Lynn's "We'll meet again" are right on. Nothing is more frustrating than waiting for the big band sing-along recorded in the 50's (which is the end of Dr. Strangelove) and instead hearing her 1930's original with the cheesy organ (which is not the end of Dr. Strangelove). Arrrrghh!!
But, the song as it was recorded in the 50's and as used in Dr. Strangelove can be found! Find it on the collection "Fabulous Fifties Divas---Sing Their Hard to Find Hits" from HitParade Records, released in 2006. Finally!
False Advertising.......2005-01-07
I only bought this cd for the Vera Lynn "We'll Meet Again" song and it was another version that's not nearly as good. The rest of the cd is solid, but not solid enough to make me forget my disappointment.
Be warned.......2003-05-28
Also Sprach Zarathustra is a great tune, but the version of We'll Meet Again is not the same one that plays as the bombs explode in Dr. Strangelove. Had I known that, I probably wouldn't have bought the disc.
GOOD COLLECTION.......2002-02-18
This is probably my favorite CD. It's a wonderful group of pieces from music from all the Kubrick films. We hear the magnificently orchestrated electronic version of "Ode to Joy" from A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. We hear the rarely heard love theme from LOLITA. And Vera Lyn's rendetion of "We'll Meet Again" is great. However, the music from FULL METAL JACKET could have been left out. "Surfin' Bird" is funny the first time, but after a while it becomes annoying. Lastly, I've never heard a better recording of "Thus Spake Zarathustra" than on the 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY soundtrack; the one here is awful. Other than that, it's a CD no Kubrick fan should be without.
"Strangelove...let's not worry about the bomb, but love it".......2001-12-18
One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album---"DR. STRANGELOVE:MUSIC FROM THE FILMS OF STANLEY KUBRICK(FILM SCORE ANTHOLOGY)---from writer/director Stanley Kubrick...just a handful of films and scores...but what an impact both have made on audiences everywhere over the years.
Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"---"THE KILLING"(1956)---"PATHS OF GLORY"(1957)---"SPARTACUS"(1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North---"LOLITA"(1962)---"2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY"(1968)---"A CLOCKWORK ORANGE"(1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes---"BARRY LYNDON"(1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role---"THE SHINING"(1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off---"FULL METAL JACKET"(1987)---quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.
