5 out of 5 stars In The Middle Of A Sonic BRAINSTORM.......2003-12-30

One of the strengths of Douglas Trumbull's criminally neglected 1983 science fiction/suspense thriller BRAINSTORM is the innovative music score that the young James Horner provided. Varese-Sarabande, to its credit, has put this twenty year-old film's soundtrack back into circulation for all to listen to.

Getting extremely able assistance from the London Symphony Orchestra, Horner devises a score of classical, choral, and dissonant elements that melds perfectly with this film's story of a device that can transfer the thoughts, sights, and smells of one person to the mind of another, but is then used for sinister purposes by the government. This is one of Horner's earliest big-screen efforts, and one can see even at this stage the genius that would come to even greater prominence with scores to APOLLO 13, TITANIC, and BRAVEHEART.

4 out of 5 stars A Must for any Hornerphile.......2002-04-15

One of the most notable things about this soundtrack is that it not only was it a digital recording--a rarity in 1983, the year of its release--but it was also recorded direct to two-track digital. As a result, very little is hidden. A perfect example of this is in one of the albums most beautiful tracks, "Michael's Gift to Karen." If you listen closely during the piano and harp pizzicato section, you can hear the musicians coughing, shifting in their seats, picking up their instruments and even rustling their sheet music!

In other tracks, such as the bombastic "Lillian's Heart Attack" and "Race For Time," we hear the first appearances of musical themes that would appear in Horner's later works like "Aliens" and "Clear and Present Danger."

In short, this is one CD that no true James Horner fan should be without, but it is not easy to find, as it was briefly taken out of print by Varese Sarabande.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-12-17

Although I do not own this cd yet I have seen the movie many times just to hear the music. It has a haunting quality that many of James Horners music has. This particular music is some of his best.

5 out of 5 stars "Douglas Trumbull's sci-fi thriller...James Horner's score".......2001-05-29

This 1983 sci-fi thriller from director Douglas Trumbull is a special effect and cinematographers dream come true. Great story-line, being able to record your dreams, thoughts or even fantasies and then play them back. Interesting cast of players...Christopher Walken, Cliff Robertson, Louise Fletcher and Natalie Wood, in her last film before her fatal accident. But none of this would work without an exceptional score, and this "film-score-buffs" is where our composer ~ James Horner comes in.

May I mention the stand outs ~ "MAIN TITLE", choral blending, brass underscore and shrieking brass amplifying the breaking of glass ~ "MICHAEL'S GIFT TO KAREN", pulsating strings transformed through a classical suite mirrored by a brief choral overlay, as a door opens displaying this beautiful minuet string ensemble.

Before this undertaking, Horner composed ~ "Humanoids from the Deep" (1980), "Wolfen" (1981), "48 Hrs." (1982) and his masterpiece "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982, he was now on his way, playing the game the "big boys" were in...now we have this score...and he's still a young man! What other scores does he have up his sleeve...I wonder?
