For variety alone, Graeme Revell's score for F. Gary Gray's high-tech action movie about hostages and bad justice deserves some attention. Revell is, after all, a pioneer of industrial music and has provided soundtracks to movies like The Crow; so it comes as no surprise to hear this olio of somber orchestra textures, angry machinery, apocalyptic choruses, and less desirable moments of synthesized rhythm and noise. This is a musical exercise in urban black magic that mixes the exotic with the staid. Without seeing the film, one gets the sense of an adventure full of ill will, self-doubt, predictable chases, and even a warped touch of romantic mystery as the eerie and fashionable specter of Celtic melody makes a brief cameo. --Joseph Lanza
Customer Reviews:
to short.......2007-03-11
I had recently seen this movie for the first time and enjoyed the music I heard so I tried out this composer whom I had never heard before, the music isnt bad, its pretty good, however the good tracks dont last long enough to really enjoy them, its only 40 minutes of music so unless you are really a fan of this composer dont waste your money, I consider this money not well spent.
Revell can do much better.......2002-10-20
There is a good thing and a bad thing about Graeme Revell. The good thing is that unlike a lot of composers, he doesn't reuse his previous material in other scores that he writes. He always comes up with something new and original. The bad thing is that what he comes up with, you do not usually end up humming to yourself. This is not to say that he doesn't come up with themes, its just that they don't leave a lasting impression. But, his music sounds great in the film which is what his job is all about. I'm not saying I don't like Graeme Revell, don't get me wrong. This soundtrack is a decent listening, there's just nothing that leaves a lasting impression that's all. Most of it is driving action music with pulsating synths, dense strings, and pounding percussion. The second track contains a bagpipe solo which sounds a lot like James Horner's theme to Braveheart in parts. The best tracks are "Hostage Crisis," "The Stakeout," "The Second Breach," "The Final Breach," and "End Titles." In other words, the best action music in the score. If you like action music, chances are you'll like this, but if you're expecting chase music with an awesome theme going along with it, like Williams, Goldsmith, and Horner write, you'll be disappointed. Not a bad listen, just needs a little bit more work.
Opening Titles Music is from.........2002-04-28
.. Craig Armstrong (the God). It is calles "Rise" and is on his album "The Space between us".
Doesn't include the full intro titles music.......2001-07-30
I bought this purely for the excellent music that accompanies the intro titles.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it is not on it. I don't know why. The rest of the soundtrack may or may not be excellent. However, I can't help feeling it's like buying the soudtrack to '2001' and then saying 'oh, sorry, you wanted to hear The Blue Danube theme AS WELL????'
Boadle out!
