Bruce Willis's awful, 1991 vanity piece is an abuse of audience goodwill and a waste of a good cast and director (Michael Lehmann of <I>Heathers</I>). The story, cowritten by Willis, concerns a cat burglar pressured into stealing precious art, including some from the Vatican. But the script is just a convenience upon which Willis piles his vaguely boorish brand of hip irony, assuming his audience will stay with him every step of the way. Certain, self-congratulatory scenes induce cringing--Willis and Danny Aiello, for instance, sing "Side by Side" (to brassy accompaniment on the soundtrack) every time they're working a job--but the overall effect is more irritating and baffling. Keep a good thought for Willis (an underrated actor better than the summer junk we usually see him in) by checking out his superior work in <I>Pulp Fiction</I> and his small but memorable role in <I>Billy Bathgate</I>. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Humor.......2007-04-10

Hudson Hawk is an incredible film that is widely immitated and emulated in different forms and incarnations, but is a singularly hillarious film. Elements of the DaVinci Code, Alias, and modern action-slapstick comedies can be traced back to this gem of a film.

If you like films that mix tones: comedy, action, drama, mystery, etc. then Hudson Hawk is the perfect film for you.

1 out of 5 stars YOU CAN SEE THE JOKES COMING A MILE AWAY ZZZzzzzzzzzZZzzzzz!.......2007-03-16

My friend felt I needed to see this film, so he lent it to me. I had never seen it before and after 15 minutes I was telling my wife who was watching with me, what was about to happen next. The jokes are so old and tired I couldn't believe they were using them! I would rather watch the Three Stooges(Not that there is anything wrong with that!)At least the Stooges are really old classic shorts that were making history. The comparison to the Stooges is that the jokes in this movies are as old as the jokes in the Stooges shorts. This movie just isn't very good and isn't very funny unless you think a person slipping on a banana peel or a pie in the face is funny?...HEE HEE HEE HAW HAW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cult Classic! I Love This Movie!.......2007-02-21

How can you not love this cult classic. When Bruce and Danny sing the classic, "Swingin on a Star" there's no better moment! Love this movie! Everyone should see it once!

4 out of 5 stars An over-the-top comedy - and good because of it! "B+".......2007-02-18

From beginning to end, this film is filled with tons of effective silliness; a few examples include Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello singing a showtune while robbing a museum, a henchman named 'Butterfinger,' and the brilliantly-delivered, classic line as Willis decapitates a bad guy: "Won't be attending that hat convention in July!" After listening to the director commentaries for both this film and 'Big Trouble in Little China,' 'Hudson Hawk' reminds me of the former - most people at the time of its release (it would seem) were expecting an outright action-adventure and instead got a very unique comedy, so if this movie hasn't been on your radar, keep the thought in mind. This film has a lot of charm, a lot of laughs, and really deserves a look if want a different kind of adventure story.

5 out of 5 stars A movie everone needs to see at least once........2007-01-09

Hudson Hawk is movie about Eddie Hawkins, famed cat-burglar the 'Hudson Hawk', who after serving 10 years in prison, finds himself blackmailed into stealing the works of Leonardo Da Vinci to recreate his gold transmuting machine. Sounds like a generic action movie, until you find that Eddie and his old and fattening partner Tommy are as unconventional as thieves can be. Singing songs to time their actions, using flair and creativity and mocking the use of gadgets, like a 'watch'. Then we find that the blackmailers include inept mobsters, sardonic and insane CIA agents, and two Billionaires that are such over-the-top lunatics that the action and dialog begin to seem like a comic book.
