This is a carefully conceived and skillfully executed collection of country music in all its many forms--from classic to countrypolitan and alt to outlaw. The disc is an aptly atmospheric companion to the film (for which roots-music fan Billy Bob Thornton shared screenwriting credit), but it's much more than that. At first glance, the 15 tracks (including two brief snippets from Christopher Young's instrumental score) may seem utterly disparate. But together they make an extraordinarily cohesive collection--and are much closer kin than one might think. Two cuts from the young singer Neko Case--the title track of her outstanding sophomore album Furnace Room Lullaby and the previously unreleased tune "Pretty Girls"--rub elbows with a pair of 1960s classics by her role model, Loretta Lynn. Willie Nelson, who chips in with the exclusive original "Great Divide," shares space with his daughter Amy (singing her self-penned "In Case We Die") as well as old pals Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Also appearing are the neo-traditionalist Seattle quintet the Souvenirs, who sound at home among such diverse and distinguished company as fabled wild man Hasil Adkins; the unclassifiable, oft-overlooked Lee Hazlewood; and the legendary George Jones. --Anders Smith-Lindall

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Furnace Room Lullaby is mesmerizing.......2004-05-17

This was a good movie - kind of slow but thought provoking. To me this is definitely a case where the soundtrack improves the movie. It introduced me to Cate Blanchett and also Neko Case. I bought this soundtrack CD specifically for the song "Furnace Room Lullaby". The DVD has a video of this song as an added bonus. I played it over and over again but wanted something to take in the car. I'm not a huge country western fan but if the music is good, I'll listen to it. I like most of the songs on this compilation. "I'm Alright" by The Souvenirs was a nice surprise too. My CD has another song on it which is not listed on the CD jacket's table of contents. It is song #10 but definitely is not the # 10 which is listed on the CD jacket's table of contents - the remainder of songs on the table of contents are correct - they just have the wrong number assigned to them which is annoying when you reference the CD jacket as you are playing it. I don't know for sure but it sounds like Los Lobos and the name of the song sounds like it should be titled "Heart On A Chain".

This CD is a good cross section of mostly country tunes. I wouldn't go out and buy a Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings CD but I really enjoy listening to this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Haunting Soundtrack!.......2001-02-02

This is a soundtrack for real music lovers. I had not heard of all the artists but almost every song is wonderful. The best surprises were Neko Case and Hasil Adkins. Also the new song by Willie Nelson is fantastic.
