Very Very Good.......2005-10-01
I haven't even read or seen Love Hina, and I love this CD. I bought this on a whim, and now I'm really glad I did ^_^
My favorites are
1. Haru da Mono!- I can't exactly pinpoint the exact reason I like this song, but the vocals are nice, and the song itself has a nice beat.
2. Sakura Saku- The opening theme to Love Hina. WONDERFUL. This song is my second favorite on the whole CD. There's just something about Megumi Hayashibara's vocals...
5. Shinobu no Touban Nisshi- I like the upbeat feel of the song. Come on, the whole song is about chores. Seriously. Any song that can be about something so workish, and sound so good has accomplished something.
6. Tsuki no Goutouku- It sounds sad, but Yuu Asakawa's vocals have this deeper voice than previous songs, so that may be why. I still like this song as a more dramatic song though.
7. Haato wa Wow Wow- Translates out to "Wow Wow at Heart". I think the whole album is worth it for this one song. I love the beginning, and the general upbeat, no worry, energetic beat. Especially the chorus. This is an awesome song if you like high vocals and the character the song represents.
8. Dame! Dame!- Upbeat song, with vocals that are pretty good. It's got this nice guitar entrance at the beginning, and the general feel of the song is nice. I also like the translated meaning of the song.
9. Kimi Saeireba- The ending theme to Love Hina. I like Sakura Saku better, but this is still a great song. It's got this definate ending theme feel to it, and it almost sounds like a sad song.
10. Hajimari wa Koko Kara- This was a bonus track, I think, and it's got this kind of easy going, I'll do it my own way!, kind of feeling. I really like Ritsuko Okazaki songs, and this one is another good one of hers. As the previous reviewer said, it's also rather a sad song, because Ritsuko Okazaki passed away ;_;
Overall, YES, it IS worth it to buy this CD. So buy it.
Wonderful J-pop that aims for a wonderful tomorrow.......2005-02-21
All the female voice artists who provide voices for the characters in the Love Hina anime series sing in the Hinata Girls Song Best collection, and many are actually positive life and love-affirming if one reads the English lyrics, provided along with the Romanized Japanese. It's an album of mostly fun and inspirational and uplifting J-Pop. [Note: for the most part, I'll be referring to the characters rather than voice actresses.]
Such is "Because It's Spring," sung by Naru, Shinobu, and Mutsumi, a mixture of J-pop and classical disco strings, with hopes of someday walking together in a storm of cherry blossoms. The opening and closing tracks of Love Hina are included, done by Megumi Hayashibara, who voices the laid-back Aunt Haruka-quite a contrast from the vibrant vocals accompanying the frenzied power-pop/punk of "Cherry Blossoms Blooming" or "Sakura Saku." Message: your moment of blessing will come and to raise both your hands for it. The English translation's quite different from the one seen in the intro of the series. The closing track, "If Only You're With Me," or "Kimisae Ireba," is a sad longing track in contrast.
The 2001 version of "Smile Smile," with horn sections mingling with the pop synths, is sung by Mutusmi and Naru, it basically tells someone to smile their troubles away, but also a promise to watch over someone forever and ever. Tender lyrics include "Let's turn those tears into diamonds someday." Naru, or rather her voice actress, Yui Horie also sings one of my personal favourites here, the J-Pop meets 80's Stock-Aitken-Waterman bubblegum of "I'm Fine Everyday." It's another number brimming with positivity for the future: "I'm making progress steadily/I hold the sun (hope) closer to my heart/I won't be defeated, especially by me/Without forgetting my passion and I'll wear a smile on my face."
Also from the series is the ballad duet Shinobu and Motoko sing when in order to give Naru, who's become a pop idol, a break, "Sweet Blue Days." Shinobu, the youngest of the Hina tenants and my favourite character from the series, is quite the hard worker, cooking and doing laundry for everyone, has a cute bouncy number coming from her pleasure of doing her part.
"Like The Moon," is a moody but melodic pop ballad by Motoko (Yu Asakawa), whose focus to becoming a stronger swordswoman at the expense of her romantic heart, but who admits that "tender mysteries are also a strength."
"Wow Wow At Heart," sung by Kaolla Su is an S-A-W-type number, crossed with melodies of Madonna's "Holiday"-it's energy reflecting the impossibly overenergetic of Su. Ever the playmate, Su encourages anyone lonely that she'll play and eat (her favourite pastimes) with them. As she says, "when you're wow wow in your heart, you'll be happy."
The lilting mid-tempo "How Wonderful" reflects the dipsy state of Mutsumi's mind, a contrast to the blaring 50's rock of "Stop Stop" by Sarah, who frets at kids trying to becoming adults too young, and why kids are told one thing and find out that it's something else. A pointed line: "Cookie cutter adults don't have freedom/for those who have become utterly deceitful feminists/are you really having fun?" Although Sarah's the most obnoxious character in Love Hina, in this song, maybe she's a genuine child after all, enjoying it albeit destructively while she can: "I can't repeat such a mischievous thing because the future's around the corner."
Mixing J-pop, prominent horns, and a chorus of Phil Collins' rendition of "You Can't Hurry Love", the vivacious "Gifts of the Future" is sung by all the characters, referring to the fun memories one has in meeting people and storing them in a personal time-capsule for the future. Puffy AmiYumi would feel at home doing this. Another highlight.
"The Beginning Is Now" is sung by Ritsuko Okazaki, who does backing vocals for "Because It's Spring!" The good and bad of life can be summed up: "Smile, fall down, night and day." It's thus a bit disheartening that she died of septic shock at the end of 2004, aged 45.
