Truly Amazing!.......2004-02-01
This is a live recording of the Red Japanese Cast that was held in February 1994 at the Chunichi Theater in Nagoya. You will be surprised at what a wonderful performance this is! There is a lot more emotion in this CD than in most of the English recordings. Kaga and Murai give beautiful performances as Valjean and Javert because of their beautiful voice tone and range. You don't have to know Japanese to enjoy this CD immensely (I surely don't know Japanese!)! Yuhko Ema is one of the most emotional Fantines I have ever heard! Her voice is beautiful, and she is the perfect Fantine! This CD has almost the entire musical on it (they took out the part in lovely ladies when she sells her necklace, much like in the 10th anniversary edition, and they cut out the intro to I dreamed a dream, cut out some of Eponine's parts, et cetera). Kaho Shimada is also on this recording- she is the Eponine on the complete symphonic recording. She is even cuter on this recording because she uses more feeling and expression in her singing because she is more familiar with Japanese than English. If you liked her performance on the complete symphonic, definitely get this recording to hear her ten times better. Her "A Little Fall of Rain" will make you cry.
The only problem I have with this recording is the sound quality. It sounds like what it is: a recording made eleven plus years ago (1994). I think that they should remaster it, especially for the price they charge you for it. The same issue goes for the Blue cast (which Amazon does not carry). There are four newer Japanese recordings that have a superior sound quality. These are not carried by Amazon but can be found at footlight.com.
Great Recording!!.......2002-10-22
This is a very good recording of the musical. It contains nearly all of the material, as compared with the London and Broadway casts. I would not recommend this recording to new listeners, but for those who already appreciate this monumental musical, this is a great experience. This was one of two live albums of Les Miserables released in Japan in 1994. The other one, known as the Japanese "Blue" Cast, is very good as well, but this one has slightly better performances from the main actors.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2002-06-02
Though Taken by surprise with the occasional insert of the English Language, I was pleasantly surprised by this recording. Purchasing it with the intent to laugh and poke fun at it, I quickly found myself moved. It was nice to listen to this prestigious piece without understanding the lyrics.
Not overly impressed by this recording's Valjean or Marius, I was pleasantly content with the ripe performances of the other performers.
Most enjoyable to me was Fantine's I dreamed a dream. In my opinion, it is one of the better potrayals, second only to Randy Graff's performance on the Broadway Album.
Worth the price? For me, yes. You be the judge.
MORE THAN JUST KAGA.......2001-07-26
An album worth purchasing. Takeshi Kaga does indeed add a exceptional dimension to this production because of the incredible quality of his voice. However, you don't have to understand Japanese to sense the complete dedication and professional quality that every member of the cast brings as each and every line is delivered, and that the whole cast united as one unit, makes this story line very real and dynamic. It is very moving and if you allow yourself you can literally be drawn into the story and even find yourself crying at the end when Val Jean dies. I found I never thought of Chairman Kaga once.
