Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not brilliant..........2001-10-25

This compilation is a fair representation of the considerable talent that is James Horner, although there are notable omissions from the collection. Personally, I don't like synthesisers, but these scores are pretty faithful to the originals, and so buy it at all means if you are a fan of James Horner, though if, like me, you're more used to John Williams, you may find some of the tracks rather boring (Though some, like 'Legends of The Fall', are absolutely wonderful), and the overuse of synthesisers irksome.

5 out of 5 stars Exacting Instrumental Recreations!.......2001-09-21

This is just an unbelievable compilation of Horner's best soundtrack music. Unlike so many other similar albums, Silva (the label) and the Prague Philharmonic do a nearly flawless job of recreating Horner's work. On most tracks, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between the original soundtrack versions and the Silva versions. The disk includes tracks from many of the big name films Horner has worked with. But it also includes some of his earlier work on lesser known films. It even includes a perfect rendition of "Willow's Theme" from the Willow soundtrack that is no longer available. With the two disks, you get nearly 2 hours of crystal clear high-quality music featuring tracks composed by the best "music man" in Hollywood...

4 out of 5 stars where's balto ? I guess Joe Young was not out yet........1999-07-22

great stuff except for excluding balto. the prague does not do the braveheart as well as the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A good compilation with a wide range of "Horner-styles".......1998-12-13

This double CD contains some of Horner's best known themes, from his recent scores to Titanic, Apollo 13, Braveheart and Glory, to his lesser-known but equally great works from Star Trek II, Willow, Cocoon, and even Battle Beyond the Stars. There are even two of his "Rock" film scores on the label, from Red Heat and Commando.

No themes from Krull or Brainstorm, unfortunately, but still a great buy for all Horner fans.

Note: If you're already familiar with the score to Glory, expect a surprise when listening to the Prague Philharmonic's rendition of "Charging Fort Wagner" - done deliberately slower and differently than in the film, much to my dislike.
