Like so many mafia films (comedy or otherwise), the soundtrack for Mickey Blue Eyes is filled with lighthearted Italian American pop classics from the vintage days of hi-fi culture. Rosemary Clooney's rambunctious "Mambo Italiano" (which had an earlier soundtrack life as a cut in Big Night) leads things off, and the action doesn't really stop till Louis Prima's "Buono Sera" 40 minutes later. Two vintage R&B cuts from Clarence "Frogman" Henry are welcome curveballs to this disc, as is the awe-inspiring cool of Paolo Conte on "Come Di." As far as sequencing goes, Mickey Blue Eyes is one of those rare soundtracks that doesn't hide the score at the end of the disc--Basil Poledouris's music seasons the entire album. The jazzy orchestrations he contributes fit the kitschy mood of this disc perfectly. The only problem with this soundtrack? We've heard most of these tunes before. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
quirky and memorable.......2006-06-11
I am most intrigued seeing reviews of this "Italian American" score when it has been used almost exclusively for UK related movies, i.e. the entire Jeeves (British) series and the fairly recent Mickey Blue Eyes, whose lead is also a Brit.
Good stuff.......2001-06-23
This is a great soundtrack. It fit in perfectly with the slapstick comedy of the movie. Coming from an Italian family I have heard all of these tunes before, however it is nice to get them all on one CD. I recommend this CD as a great conversational piece. For example have it playing in the backround during a diner party, guests will love it. I know mine did.
Pleasant Music.......2000-03-30
A little too schmoozy for average listening, but add some cards, some good friends, and maybe some alcohol, and it makes for a pleasant evening's listen. Make a habit out of this... and soon you'll all be joining in the chorus. 'I don't know why I love you, but I do!'.
