The soundtrack album of the popular TV show Malcolm in the Middle kicks out a few tires and windows as it replicates the boundless, smart-assed enthusiasm of youth. They Might Be Giants wrote an entire song ("Boss of Me") around the show's theme music, and it's the duo's spastic energy that sets the tone. The addition of bands with proven laugh tracks, such as Barenaked Ladies and Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies (who attack Dr. John's '70s hit "Right Place, Wrong Time" with punk-funk smarts), keeps things flowing as expected. But the surprises are what's interesting. Reeling from their David Letterman endorsed "Who Let the Dogs Out," the Baha Men provide the subtler, melodic "You All Dat" (radio mix), which won't be chanted in stadiums worldwide, but is a catchy tune nonetheless. Sneaking Hanson onto a soundtrack filled with promising acts like Travis, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and Stroke 9 might seem like a breach of protocol, but isn't being sneaky and deceitful part of the show's charm in the first place? --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Excellent show, excellent album.......2003-04-22
This is a good album to have especially for background music while you're working. There are no tracks on here that are destined to be remembered as classics but that doesn't mean they're not good.
Of course Boss of Me by They Might Be Giants which is the song heard at the start and end credits of each episode is on here. I just Don't Care by The Dust Brothers is a nice remix of quotes from all the family during the earlier episodes set to a nice beat. The voices of the boys are different to current episodes of course.
There's just lots of tracks which aren't anything special so weren't successful obviously on their own but are nice to have playing in the background such as Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex which brings back memories of country dancing that for some reason we were forced to do in school.
There's no big names on this album in fact I hadn't heard of most of them before I listened to this but it is worth purchasing especially if you're a fan of the funniest show on television at the moment.
Malcolm music.......2003-03-18
This is one of my favorite CD's. MOst CD's you only like 2 or 3 songs but on this i like all but 2. Also the theme song on the show is shortened and so it's cool to hear all of the song. Most of the songs are really good and some are even really funny. The last song (I just don't care) has lines from the show put to music. The first time my friend and i heard it we couldn't stop laughing. There are a lot of really cool songs on this CD and i would redomend this to most people over 10.
Hurrah!.......2002-08-20
I owe everything to MitM. It introduced me to They Might Be Giants! I hafta say, this CD is great for ANYONE who likes rock music and ANYONE who likes the show. The tunes really capture the essence of what Malcolm In The Middle is all about: being a kid and loving it! I'm not really keen on 'We Are Monkeys' despite previously being a pretty casual fan of Travis and I think that perhaps 'I've Seen Better Days' by Citizen King would have been a really good song to put on, plus it was used in the pilot episode.
All in all, most of the songs are brilliant (Boss Of Me, Washin' + Wonderin', Bizarro) but some do get a bit tiresome after a while. It is a great CD and I definitely would recommend it, but you certainly have to be into rock to enjoy it.
Wow! What a great CD!!!.......2002-05-23
Well, I never was a Malcom fan, but when I heard that my favorite band Hanson was on the soundtrack, I immediately went out and bought it, not caring about the other songs that may be on the CD. I put it in my CD player and, WOW! All the songs on this soundtrack are AMAZING, especially "Heaven is A Halfpipe," "Drunk Is Better Than Dead," and of course, "Smile" by Hanson! Now that I got the soundtrack, I started watching the show, and I've soon become a fan of Malcom in the Middle. You need to go out and buy this CD now!
