This early '80s sword-and-steroids epic by writer/director John Milius is notable for making a bankable action-star of Arnold Schwarzenegger and cementing the reputation of film composer Basil Poledouris (<I>Robocop</I>, <I>Hunt For Red October</I>, <I>Free Willy</I>, <I>Starship Troopers</I>). A dream assignment for a young composer eager to showcase the range his skills, the lusty <I>Conan</I> score hearkens back to the '30s heyday of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's unabashed Euro-classicism, but with enough modern rhythmic and percussive flourishes to satisfy the modern listener. Buyer beware--this music is not intended for rush hour commute listening, and Amazon.com will not be held liable for the carnage such exposure might inspire. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Conan the Barbarian..........2007-05-08

Among others, I miss Bail Poledouris also. "Conan the Barbarian" is an outstanding soundtrack. I also have the "Varese" edition, I bought it back in the 90's for $11.99.

My only complaint: If you remember the scene just before Conan kills the giant snake, he stumbles onto that jade copy of Thulsa Doom's "two snakes" symbol and freezes for a few seconds (just before the female sacrifice jumps in), that violin passage was the best part of the movie for me (it lasted maybe one minute!). I wish that violin solo was on the soundtrack, but, alas, no such luck!

Still, the soundtrack garners '5' stars from me...

5 out of 5 stars One of The All-Time Great Soundtracks.......2007-03-21

This soundtrack is phenomenal! From the very first cut, the main theme "Anvil of Crom," the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack hooks you with its huge martial sound of heavy percussion and blaring horns.

Basil Poledouris proved that he could capture the essence of the character, and set the moood of each scene, whether it required foreboding, mystery, romance, humor, and especially, combat.

Just as this movie launched Arnold Schwarzenegger as a major movie star, this soundtrack launched Basil Poledouris as a major league composer, conductor, and soundtrack creator. If you love rousing, thrilling, penetrating music, this is the soundtrack for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-03-18

I love it from beginning to end. I like the soundtrack when I first saw the movie. My favorite part is the beginning. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Tis Good!.......2007-03-11

If you've seen the movie then you know the music, if you havn't seen the movie... then why the heck are you looking at the soundtrack??? All and all, if you just want good instrumental! Then Boom! There You Go!
