<I>Pure Frosting</I>, the Presidents' farewell/B-sides-and-outtakes collection is consistent with--in fact, as good, or better than--the band's two proper studio albums, not hard for such an enjoyably slight outfit. The Seattle pop trio's last recordings include typically, entertainingly goofy considerations of subjects like "Mobile Home," a waitress at the "Love Delicatessen" and touring "Japan." "Man (Opposable Thumb)" turns out to have more going for it than a great title, proving a clever dissection of both machismo and human nature. Live versions of three cuts from their platinum debut are redundant, but fit with the record's agreeably slapdash nature; a sophomore-effort number, "Tiki God," is included here in its bongo-driven "lounge" incarnation. And while a CD-single version of Plastic Bertrand's immortal "Ca Plane Pour Moi" isn't here, two other great covers--"Video Killed the Radio Star" (a staple of the group's live show cut for <I>The Wedding Singer</I>) and a torrid, totally apt rendition of Ian Hunter's "Cleveland Rocks" (<I>The Drew Carey Show</I>'s theme)--do end up highlights. <I>--Rickey Wright</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album.......2005-09-21

If you are not already a fan of this band, make this your first album. I've had it since it first came out and it's still the best CD I own. Usually when playing a CD, I only listen to the 2 or 3 songs I like, then turn it off. This is a CD to turn on, sit back, and enjoy. It's good start to finish. The only possible exception is "Sunshine" which just doesn't seem to belong on this album. On the whole, though, I can't recommend this album enough!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Sweet.......2005-02-17

I highly disagree with the few reviews on this page. There are absolutely ZERO low points on this album. I suppose that Slip Away could be considered a low point when put in perspective, if Teenage Girl is %1,000 awesome, then Slip Away is only %457 awesome, but they're both way more than awesome. I'd also like to say to the people who say that PUSA has never done anything like Tremelo Blooz: What about Back Porch and, to a lesser extent, Froggy? However, I do agree that this is a must have for any PUSA fan. Even if you're not a PUSA fan, buy this album and the other four and become a fan of one of the greatest bands ever.

5 out of 5 stars More TV Than Airplay.......2003-07-16

It's a shame that PUSA never recieved much radio airtime after their first album was overplayed. This is a great album and a must for any Presidents fan. Love Delicatessen is a great opener, then it's followed by the never great Video Killed The Radio Star (a mediocre song from the start), but the bouncy Mobile Home boosts the beat. Japan is simply a rock song with a good beat, while Sunshine is a change; not for the better or worse, but something different for the band. The Live Version of Back Porch is jus enjoyable to hear (for those of us who never saw them in concert). Man is just odd, it starts out fine, then changes styles completely. The original Tiki God was better, but this one has it's place. Teenage girl is another rock song. Slip Away is a low point, but is worth listening to. Tremolo Blooz is a fun Delta Blues/Western tune and is one of the highest points on the album. Wel all know Cleveland Rocks, and the Live version on Lump surpasses the original.
Overall GET THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars Probably PUSA's second best CD........2003-06-29

This CD features songs that have been released on other various recordings including two live songs of Back Porch (excellent version) and Lump. Some songs on here have never been released before. And some of these songs are in movies/tv shoes. Video Killed the Radio Star was featured in the Wedding Singer, and Cleveland Rocks is the theme song to the Drew Carey Show. Both of those songs weren't written by PUSA. And another song known to the fans would be Tiki Lounge God, but in a totally different style, it is pretty much acoustic with bongo drums.

All in all, a great CD to end the career of a great band!

5 out of 5 stars Pure frosting, extra frosting you'll eat the cake.......2003-05-20

The final episode of the P of USA album trilogy. This album's main hits were sensational cover versions of classic songs. Video Killed the Radio Star and Cleveland Rocks (as heard in the opening credits of the Drew Carey Show) are superb.

Original songs on here such as Japan and Love Delicatessen are pretty good too. There's also a few live songs on here as well which may be a real bonus if you never bought an singles or album versions with bonus live tracks. The P of USA were pretty good live.
