Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Nearly Perfect.......2001-05-15

How does he do it? Even with rather home-grown recording and production values, Newell's albums literally sing with spirit, soul and wit. The songs are the shining star here, supported by his somewhat Lennonesque vocal delivery and a slightly world-weary, retired-professorial attitude. "Good Night Country Girl" will probably be the first song to grab you after your initial listen-through, with "Call Me Michael Moonlight", "Miss Van Houten's Cooffee Shop" and "Lions Drunk On Sunlight" likely quick to follow. Nothing fancy, just some pretty good arrangements, decent performances, and work from someone who still sees pop music as a craft worthy to be the logical descendant of traditions purveyed by Shakespeare, Coleridge, Poe, et al, and is capable of living up to that standard. More direct and pure than "The Greatest Living Englishman" but probably equally great.

5 out of 5 stars The Modern Ray Davies.......2001-01-13

Martin Newell went from strength ("Greatest Living Englishman") to strength (this album) in the 90's; no-one chronicles life in modern England like this man. From his castigation of politicians to ruminations on the changing seasons, perhaps only Andy Partridge (XTC) is in his league. Each song is a short story, a true pop symphony; check out "Miss Van Houten's Coffee Shop" for a bit of Beach Boys meet the Move. Cheers.
