4 out of 5 stars Early Whoosh at its finest.......2006-02-18

It doesn't matter if you are black or white. The Soft Shoe Shuffle cd "Cold Lampin" is nothing short of, well, beautimus... just beautimus. Paul Fischer's Kaisaer Big Gun-reminiscent guitar licks never dissapoint. One can hear the Steve Yankee influence (also apparent in the guitar licks of Joseph T. Founder-of-the-rap-club Nemiroff (Jahronee, Vesuvius)) in Paul's playing style. Matt Fitz-Henry gives a stellar low-end performance, while Alan Munshower proves himself to be a competant percussionist (for the best Alan Munshower recording to date check out Trio Ricochet's never-going-to-be-released demo where Munshower faces his greatest musical challenge: attempting to solo over a loud foot tapping sound that follows no set meter or rhythm whatsoever.) My only complaint about cd is the lack of attention given to Manouche "Monwhoosh" Fournier. While living in Baltimore, I experienced "The Sangita Group" aka "Monwhoosh with backup dancers". This project was a total crowd-pleaser featuring such hits as "the Monwhoosh laugh", "the Monwhoosh disco-dance", "the Monwhoosh vibraslap extravaganza", and, well of course, "the Monwhoosh 5 minute cowbell solo". With Soft Shoe Shuffle, we hear none of the above and are forced to accept the fact that Fournier cannot always lead every project in which he performs. Mayday Orbit zine states that, at times, SSS feels like it may be a side project. This is most apparent with Fournier, as he would never devote all his musical energy to a group that does not feature at least 20 (many) songs of him playing solo steel guitar and laughing. However, if Rootabega says to buy this album, you probably should.
