Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars You don't know what I'm gonna do yet. Just wait a minute........2006-08-13

Elvis Presley performed two concerts at Madison Square Garden on June 10, 1972; a matinee and an evening show. The evening show was rush released two weeks later, but the entire matinee didn't come out until 25 years later. But three songs from the matinee had been released earlier; "Reconsider Baby" and "I'll Remember You" appeared on Elvis: A Legendary Performer Volume 4 and "I Can't Stop Loving You" was on Welcome to My World. The two Madison Square Garden concerts have virtually the same set lists, with "Until It's Time For You to Go", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Reconsider Baby" and "I"ll Remember You" being exclusive to the matinee, and "The Impossible Dream" being unique to the evening show. Elvis gives similar performances at both shows, trying pretty hard on the newer songs, and rushing through his old hits without much feeling. If I had to pick one of the concerts, I would give the slight edge to the matinee, due to the inclusion of the rarely played live "Reconsider Baby". But of course, true Elvis fans will want to have both concerts.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CONCERT!!!.......2006-08-08

This has got to be one the best concerts done by anyone!!. Dont take my word for it - listen for yourself!!.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-03

This is one of the best commercially released live albums by Elvis. The sound quality is excellent, Elvis' performance is energetic and vital, the band is crack and the song selection is quite good. Anyone with the slightest interest in live recordings of Elvis from the early 70s would do very well to pick this up, it's much better than the other live record from Elvis' 1972 stint in New York, 'As Recorded at Madison Square Garden'. The main flaw, like all Elvis live records it seems, is that the 50s tunes are rushed through and not paid much attention (I can't blame him though, he must have been quit tired of them by this point). Best songs: Funny How Time Slips Away, For The Good Times, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling.

4 out of 5 stars A sunny afternoon in the garden.......2005-12-05

This concert is the earlier of two that Elvis gave at Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple in June of 1972. Overall this one is very good, but not quite the equal of the evening concert that became the album "ELVIS AS RECORDED LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN." For instance, here Elvis starts out a little sluggish, and admits about a third of the way through that a song "woke me up." Yet after that point he really gets with it, and the last two-thirds of the concert is great. As usual, he shows his mastery of an amazing variety of styles, including blues, country, rock, and rhythm-and-blues.

There are interesting differences between this and the "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN" album. The songs are almost identical, but this one drops "The Impossible Dream" and adds "Blue Suede Shoes," "Until It's Time For You to Go," "I'll Remember You," and "Reconsider Baby." That last is especially interesting since Elvis recorded the song in the studio in 1960, and as far as I know besides alternate takes this is the only other recording of him singing it. And a few songs here are done better than in the evening concert, notably "For the Good Times," which in the later concert he sings with less feeling, and the bass guitar is far too loud. But at least on my CDs, this afternoon concert has the much better sound quality of the two, since on my copy of the "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN" album RCA fouled up the transfer to CD so that Elvis's voice is muffled during the first half (I bought it several years ago, so maybe they've corrected the problem by now).

In sum, I recommend this recording either to the serious Elvis collector or to someone who has nothing of his.
