very scary.......2005-09-22

COMUS was an unusual band who created an unusual and unique album. First Utterance is a frightening journey into the inner depths of pagan folk. it may be hard to imagine a scary record with bongos, flutes, and acoustic guitars, but this will surely open your mind to a whole new world. have you ever seen the movie "The Wicker Man?" Comus is like the house band for that island where the movie takes place. the musical arrangements here are astonishing. very complex and often quite lovely. especially on track two "The Herald", where the angelic female voices soar and weave in and out of the tangled golden web of audio bliss. but for the most part, this is vile wicked sounding folk music. the vocals are often times sung in a sort of ogre voice and add a creepy sense of sinister intent. the lyrics are also quite strange and gory. Comus is a band not for mass appeal, but a group fit for unusual and rare tastes in great musical adventure!
