4 out of 5 stars The voice of Survivor.......2007-01-20

Originally released in 1999, Empires was a solo effort by former Survivor frontman Jimi Jamison. The music you hear on Empires is of course quite similar to Survivor's particular brand of AOR. In fact, the album was originally released under the name "Jimi Jamison's Survivor."

Empires is a very solid, very old-school AOR album, full of ballads and love anthems. It's an album very much in the classic Survivor mold. Believe it or not, one of the album highlights is the song I'm Always Here, which was the theme song to the TV show Baywatch. Jamison carries the album with his warm and powerful voice. The songs are for the most part quite well written, though they do tend to get a bit cheesy at times. I guess that's just one of the pitfalls of this kind of music. Still, this is an enjoyable album that should please most old-school AOR fans, especially Survivor fans.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic rock, powerful guitars, & a sprinkling of keyboards.......2004-12-11

This CD is killer, definitely the best release of the year. It's a shame it is only on import. While Jamison's 1991 cd "When Love Comes Down" was disjointed and only had the title song, "If you walk away", and "True Lovers" as a reminder of the melodic SURVIVOR sound, this effort is easily more consistent and 1000 times better; it gets rockin' the moment you press play. The title track is an AMAZING ballad (a duet with Liza Frazier) and was originally written for the Too Hot To Sleep album (which I read in an interview). BUY THIS, you fool!!!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, man, I feel like a wild young child again!.......2003-12-05

I've been following the Survivor team for years, 'cause I'm a desperate lover of the hard melodic rock of the 80's. Well, I'm 23, now, the 80's are gone, and this new album is not completely Survivor winner team. But it sounds like! Oh, man, when I put the disc in my CD player I feel like a young man again, running wild and surrounded by a huge and strong spirit calling me. Every qualities that I strongly appreciate on the 80's sound, the crunch guitars, the melody, the spirit, It's all there, it's like a fusion of every good work that Survivor brought to us along the years, since Eye of the Tiger days. Not talking of the hard rock sound in songs like First Day Of Love, Have Mercy. Beautiful! Full of Soul! Enjoyable! I was wondering where are Jim Jamison these days, I think him and Survivor guys needs to reunite and give us real music experience again, 'cause the music situation these days are so boring, except for some real good bands we have, but they're not very known by the audience, witch is a shame, and the good old bands that are returning, but unfortunately, nothing lasts forever.

4 out of 5 stars The True Voice Of Survivor Rocks Hard!!!.......2002-05-25

There is no question that Jimi Jamison has one of the greatest rock singing voices of all time! In 1984 he propelled Survivor back on top with his powerful and soulful vocals and unchallenged intensity.
After years of touring with his own band he came up with a masterpiece of rock ! This cd is Jimi at his best. Dream Too Far, First Day Of Love , Run From The Thunder, Just Beyond The Clouds and Cry Tough .. bottom line rock!!!! Although he has returned to Survivor with Frankie Sullivan, I hope he releases another solo effort to match this great cd.. One song he wrote years ago that would have made this cd even better was I'm A Fighter.. ! Lets hope Jimi Or Survior keep rocking and make great music for the fans.

5 out of 5 stars 4 3/4 stars; meaty melodic rock.......2002-05-16

Legal issues of this album aside, this is an excellent, rocking effort by Jimi Jamison and the boys. I never expected it to rock so much. "Run From The Thunder" is a perfect example with its crunching guitars and uptempo chorus. "First Day Of Love" sounds like it will be a third ballad in a row on the album (after the Baywatch theme "I'm Always Here" and the duet title track--both fine songs), but then it kicks right in. "Love Is Alive" is another example of a song that rocks surprisingly hard. Ballads such as "Just Beyond The Clouds" and "November Rain" are also of very high quality. "Calling America" is yet another exceptional anthem that absolutely holds up to previous Survivor anthems. The live tracks from '80s material at the end is also a nice touch.
