Used Cars by The Becky Chace Band.......2002-06-21
Freelance Review by Roger Price)
If you had to categorize this somewhat understated collection of consistent melodies, wrapped in a range of lyrics from appreciation of the small things in life (title track), the playful (Shine On, Sweetwater), the deeply heartfelt and emotional (That's How I Love You, My Heart is Heavy), the sultry (Sleeping Soundly), to the intensely yet simplistically beautiful (Surrender, Only You), and the majestically haunting (Uninspired, Staring at The Sun)... you might use terms like country-folk , folksy-rock, inspired vocals, even jazz or world with a hint of Spanish gypsy (You'll Never Know, Black Cat).
Because this effort showcases the less frequently seen acoustic side of the band, some may see it as something to hold their fans over until the completion of the electric followup to 2000's bristling Take Your Shot. In fact, it stands out as anything BUT a "holdover." It is a rare collection of originals with a depth and beauty that defy simple labels while reaching into your soul more deeply with each listen. There is a stark yet biting honesty to the poetic lyrics of the songwriting team of Annunziata, Chace, Minisce, from the confessional ("what if I told you I was sorry, and numb; that in my self-centered rage I lost my senses, became undone?" from Absolute Warhol), to the yearning of Uninspired ("my confusion is outweighed by my fear") eerily reminiscent of the Rolling Stones' 1960's Lady Jane.
Music fans of the 1960's and 70's will sense the influences of Chace, who grew up listening to a diverse array of familiar but not all commercial music from Dylan and the Beatles to Merle Haggard and Dave Brubeck. The fact that Led Zeppelin is her all time favorite (more due to their diversity than their heavy metal blues) and Lucinda Williams is one of her most respected current influences, is subtly evident in the uncanny original sound of the BCB.
The profound consistent quality of USED CARS holds the listener's curiosity in no small part due to the contributions of guitarist/vocalist Brian Minisce, in the simultaneously sad and uplifting Only You, and bassist/vocalist Lisa Annunziata, in the smoky jazz of Sleeping Soundly.
The "innocent maturity" of vocals that range from gutsy to starkly gorgeous is another of the seeming contradictions of this band (both individually and collectively), together for only three years but quietly bursting with a pleasing creativity in a range of style that requires no limiting label to reach wider acceptance. Whether the listener is intimately familiar with Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Emmylou Harris or Alison Kraus, or not, you sense their existence in momentary ways yet conclude that Becky Chace is an artistically accessible original who pleasantly surprises you at every turn, supported by a talented unit whose musical growth you can look into the future and see. It is a rare delight to know that the early catalog of a new band, as gifted and satisfying as it is, is clearly growing into increasing musical bliss with every newly-penned song (and the BCB is quite prolific) and live performance. This is a band that you may have known, or not known you were waiting for, but one you'll be thankful has arrived.
