Customer Reviews:
Unrealized Potential.......2005-02-04
This album is almost always credited to Abfinoosty, but that isn't too surprising seeing as Asif Ali's name appears nowhere on the cover and the name of his former band is part of the title. However it really is Asif Ali's solo album, which he wrote and recorded after leaving the group. The way the title of the CD is written on the cover results in a lot of confusion when trying to find it. The full title of this release is "Out of Abbfinoosty Comes The Storm", and it was released in 1996, just a couple of years after the band Abbfinoosty's one and only album "Future".
When listening to the first two tracks on this CD, one can really hear the potential for a great album. Unfortunately it is not sustained throughout the whole CD. That is not to say that the rest of this album is bad, just one could imagine Asif putting together a better album. My favorite tracks are "When the Sun Explodes", "Interstellar" and "Dream". That being said, there is some excellent guitar work on most of the tracks, and some of the others grow on me with each listen. The pieces on this CD are more versatile than those on the band's "Future" CD, and Asif is clearly experimenting with different styles and moods.
There are 11 tracks on this CD, and Asif is credited with Guitars, Vocals and Keyboards on all the tracks, although other than a short spoken vocal on "Interstellar" it is an instrumental piece. The drumming duties are split between Dave Ethridge and Robert Lowe, the latter being the drummer from Abbfinoosty. Other guest musicians include Alan Dickerson (keyboards) on "Interstellar", Tony Norton, the bass player from Abbfinoosty, (Bass) on "Love like This", Leanee Kaliedo (vocals) and Tony Nash (Trumpet) on "Churchyard" and "You'll Never Make It".
There are some very good parts to this album, but it sounds like Asif Ali was a bit too self-indulgent in his experimentation. It will be interesting to see if he releases another album and if it is a bit more focused than this one. If you enjoyed Abbfinoosty's "Future" album then you will probably like this one too, although you may be just a little disappointed in its not reaching its full potential.
