Customer Reviews:
Obscure Gem.......2004-01-24
About as obscure as any record ever released by a major label, this 1972 gem came out through CBS and was quickly cut out. Produced by Alan Douglas, the band was comprised of Butterfield Blues Band alums Buzzy Feiten on guitar, "Brother" Gene Dinwiddie on sax and flute and drummer Phillip Wilson(who passed away last year, sadly) along with keyboardist Neil Larsen and session bass player Freddie Beckmeier. Legendary jazz bassist Dave Holland also appeared on one track on the original vinyl and is included on this collection on a second bonus track. Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira also contributed to several tracks.
The music mixes jazz, blues, rock, soul and gospel influences. The styles vary greatly from song to song and yet it still really holds together. Great hooks, great melodies, great solos and a spontaneous production sound give it an organic feel that is missing from recording today. Sometimes not having a big budget is a good thing. In it's day this was a record you had to be cool enough to know about because you weren't going to hear it on the radio. Even today it is only available on Japanese import.
