Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Great Peter Ivers.......2003-08-09

Peter was a great force in blues, r & b, rock and new wave of the late 1960's, 70's and early 80's. He learned to play harmonica from the master: Little Walter. He could have jsut been a great soulful harmonica player and part of a blues band, but he didn't stop at that. He began to compose melodies. And then he began to write lyrics. He found great vocalists to sing his songs such as Diana Ross and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Eventually he began to sing himself. This disc is kind of a "best of", but unfortunately does not include anything from his first Album "knight of the blue communion" which contained Lyrics by Tim Mayer and the voice of Yolande Bavan. I disagree with Mark, the other reviewer about "Alpha Centuri"; that song is one of his best and fortunately it includes fantastic bass of his dear friend Buell Neidlinger. Thank you Peter, we miss you.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2003-05-26

"Nirvana Peter" features tracks from Mr. Ivers's two Warner Bros. solo albums ("Terminal Love" from 1974 and "Peter Ivers" from 1976) and some later non-album recordings, including pieces from his 1978 stage show "Nirvana, Cuba".

I cannot rate this CD highly enough. Mr. Ivers was a very talented, much-loved man whose musical aptitude on this work is equalled only by his total willingness to show his deepest feelings and thoughts, as painful as they sometimes may be. The reviewer who called him a "Cynic" is a little confused, as he (P.I.) was one of the most positive, upbeat people the entertainment world will ever have the pleasure of meeting.

From the anguished longing of "Even Stephen Foster" to the nostagic whimsy of "Eighteen and Dreaming" to the right-on politics of "Free the Funk", everyone can find much to enjoy about this work. His harmonica playing is fantastic, often otherworldly in its emotiveness. And although some consider his singing to be an acquired taste, I personally think he has a cute voice (although he *really* pushes his luck on "Alpha Centauri").

I only wish that the CD featured tracks from his first two albums (1969's "Knight of the Blue Comunion" and 1970's "Take It Out On Me") but since these albums were released by non-Warner entities (Epic and Sony respectively) I'm not too surprised by their omission. At one point, there was another P.I. anthology available ("The Peter Ivers Saga") but this seems to have disappeared into the ozone.

Peter, we miss you here on Earth. Hope you're having a blast up there.
