Well, I love this CD and I also bought it after seeing her in concert at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, VT. This was about two years ago now and each time I listen to it, I learn that I love it more with each listen!
The clairty in her vocals are only surpassed by the clarity in the lyrics, which she paints such a vivdly clear picture in your mind with! A picture that appears more as a memory or preminition, than as a painting...
This is music that can truly be felt! Not only does it make you understand her thoughts, but if you listen with someone close to you, it brings the two of you even closer as you share Lisa's thoughts!
I would recommend this to anyone who likes music with a gentle, upbeat folksy feel to it, as these recordings set a new standard for this type of music!

I want to know how Lisa McCormick has managed to follow me and my friends around and record our conversations without us seeing her. I hereby invite her to come out from behind the shrubbery and go ahead and join us for coffee. Her words are bright, funny, and smart. But what I love most about "Sacred" is how she is unafraid to get playful with her music as well as the lyrics.

That's a territory most folk singers don't dare step into. On most folk music CDs I've heard, the music doesn't change much from song to song. The tempo speeds up or slows down, but the focus is mostly on the lyrics. McCormick throws in surprises just where they're needed. "Purgatory Cafe" sounds like a smoky jazz cafe with heavy use of the upright bass. I can taste the cigar smoke in the air. Here, she's having playful fun with the music as well as her lyrics. She makes purgatory sound much more fun than heaven. Another pleasant musical surprise is the acoustic guitar waltz at the end ("Waltz Out Your Door").

Most of the time, McCormick's lyrics bring a smile of ready identification. In "Do Something Stupid," she feels an unwelcome attraction for someone and wants him to break the spell:

"Do something stupid so I can get you off my mind.... Put me to sleep with never ending stories About people I don't even know. Light a cigar Blow it in my face Ask me if I've gained a little weight That would be great."

As with the music, she changes the mood often with the lyrics as well. In between the ironic chuckles, she stops to paint a beautiful portrait in "Grow Old With Me" that makes me wish I could be there. We all have a beautiful moment in our lives that looks like a watercolor painting suspended in time. McCormick has captured hers in a song. So Lisa, I'm serious about joining us for coffee. You've been writing what we talk about, so you may as well join us. -Jennifer Layton
