4 out of 5 stars Initial J: Jay Chou's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-13

This greatest hits CD was released around the same time as (and is also a play on) Jay's first movie, "Initial D." It's a collection of his hit songs. All of these are terrific songs, although I personally would pick slightly different ones if I were to compile a collection of Jay's best songs. That's the only reason I'd give this album a 4.5 instead of a 5, just a minor qualm. Be assured though, that even his worse songs imo are still better than 95% of the other music out there.

Tracklist:
From his first album, "Jay Album"
1. Lovely Woman (Ke Ai Nu Ren) - no Jay best hits album is complete without this song. This is my favorite Jay Chou song EVER. It's one of the first ones I've heard from him...it's such a sweet song and totally addictive.
2. Black Humor (Hei Se You Mo) - beautiful ballad. His voice is really nice in this one and he sings with real emotion.
^ These songs are both excellent, but two other great songs from his debut album are "Tornado" and "Starry Mood" which are among the best he's recorded and could have been included, too.

From his second album, "Fantasy"
3. Ninja (Ren Zhe) - this is one of the most fun and energetic songs he's recorded. Jay is masterful at combining old and new-style music. Here he combines ancient Japanese music with modern hip-hop to terrific effect.
4. Nunchucks (Shuang Jie Gun) - this one is quite similar to Ninja, except it's more heavy on the rap side. Also a very fun song.
^ These songs are good examples of his variety and ability to fuse Western music and ancient-style Chinese music. However, his "Fantasy" album is one of his best, actually, so other songs that could have been included are: "Love Before the Century" (best R&B song he's ever recorded, imo), "Simple Love" (another one of his best songs ever), and "Silence" (gorgeous ballad).

From his third CD, "Eight Dimensions":
5. The Final Battle (Zui Hou De Zhan Yi) - not one of my favorites. He's made better R&B songs than this one (like "Love Before the Century"!); it's too bad one of those was not included instead. A superior song off this CD is "The Orcs" (first track), which is an amazing R&B song that makes you want to get up and dance!

From his fourth CD, "Ye Hui Mei"
6. In the Name of the Father (Yi Fu Zhi Ming) - LOVE this song. It's the first track off his "Ye Hui Mei" album. It's amazing...he combines rap, R&B, and Italian-style music in it.
7. East Wind Breaks (Dong Feng Po) - a nice ballad.
8. Double Sabres (Shuang Dao) - this song is amazing...it's alternative + rock + some rap. It's another one of my favorites and it makes you want to get up and dance. The chorus for this song is incredible and so catchy! I also highly recommend the music video for this song....it's Jay's best MV imo and I've never seen him look cooler.
^ They didn't include the very best song off this CD, "Clear Day"! wtf, that's totally one of the best songs he's written. I'd replace "East Wind Breaks" with "Clear Day."

From his fifth CD, "Common Jasmine Orange"
9. Common Jasmine Orange (Qi Li Xiang) - title track and hands down, one of his best ballads. Best song off this album. This is such a romantic song, and he sings it really well.
10. Grandma (Wai Po) - beautiful background melody in this song...I love Jay's rapping in this song.
^ "Common Jasmine Orange" is probably my favorite Jay CD. I'd actually replace "Grandma" with either of these tracks: "Garden Party" (LOVE this song) or "General/Checkmate" (one of his best rap songs, great beat!)

From the "Initial D" soundtrack
11. Drifting (Piao Yi) - Catchy melody and quite memorable. If you've seen the movie, the music takes you back to its racing scenes really well.
12. All The Way North (Yi Lu Xiang Bei) - nice alternative song. I like his vocals here.
