Customer Reviews:
The planets aligned for this recording.......2006-11-05
Melissa Manchester had a gift for the type of Funk/R&B represented here. (Strange that she did so little of it during her career.) The list of her backing musicians on this album reads like a who's who: David Spinozza, Jeff Mironov, Sid McGinnis, Will Lee, Tony Levin, Steve Gadd, Don Grolnick, Lenny Castro... The songwriting is solid - and Melissa's performance is sparkling!
There are no "hits" on this recording - but easily half of the songs *could* be. One real standout is "No One's Ever Seen This Side of Me" - the only song on the album written by Manchester. If you want to hear Melissa Manchester at the absolute peak of her abilities - this is the recording to buy!
More Melissa, Please!.......2005-03-26
This is not so much a review on Melissa Manchester's masterpiece "Singin'" as it is a plea to the proverbial Powers That Be (as if there is much chance any of them will read this review) to PLEASE release this much-to-overlooked singer/songwriter's entire catalog of music on CD. Her entire library of music is long overdue to be released on CD. It seems you can find every repulsive rap release ever issued to Lithuanian polkas but you can't get Melissa Manchester's LPs on CD. In the meantime, grab what you can and, even though this CD is overpriced because it is an import - get this one while you can. For those who have said this is not among her best - turn up your hearing aid. This is most certainly one of Melissa's best. She proves she can be an interpreter of song with this album and not just a singer of her own songs. Seldom do I find cover versions of songs as good as the originals but Melissa does all of these covers justice. She makes these songs her own, gives them a new twist with brand new arrangements and breathes new life into old classics. If you are a Melissa fan - don't pass this one by. Now - to those Powers That Be - get off your collective buns and get her other material released on CD: Bright Eyes, Mathematics, Emergency, Hey Ricky, and Help Is On The Way should have been available on CD years ago!! Thanks for the music, Melissa!
SOULFUL SONGSTRESS!!.......2004-11-19
From the opener "Sad Eyes" which is a glorius ballad, this is the beginning of a wonderful vocal experience. "No One's Ever Seen This Side Of Me" which was penned by Ms. Manchester is a cooker. Melissa's voice is powerfully rousing on the funky "Stand". The closing song "The Warmth of the Sun" (penned by Brian Wilson & Mike Love) is a moving tribute to one of the Beach Boys most brilliant works. This is a must-have CD for loyal Melissa fans, or anybody who appreciates fine vocalists.
VOCAL BRILLIANCE= A TRUE DIVA!! BRAVO MELISSA!!!.......2004-03-12
This one is the real deal when it comes to great SINGIN' with loads of soul and lots of passion! From the opener "Sad Eyes" you know that this is going to be Singing at it finest! The greatness continues with the rhythmic "I Wanna Be Where You Are" which is also great by Jose Feliciano and both versions really cook!!! Seductive soul at its finest on "A Love Of Your Own" and then comes an original Melissa Manchester classic "No One's Ever Seen This Side Of Me" that rocks the house!! Melissa has recorded this great several times but this is the definitive version hands down and does it ever cook!! If this doesn't get you moving call 911!!!! A James Taylor original "You Make It Easy" becomes another classic vocal by Manchester that smolders with passion and makes one wonder why this great work didn't explode onto the airwaves when released in 1977! So much better than the disco crap of that era. Sly Stone's "Stand" is given a great funky workout here and becomes the definitive version as Melissa out-funks and out-rocks the Family Stone original! "My Love Is All I Know" is a gorgeous vocal and "Time" is deeply heartfelt and simply sublime. A gospel edge is given to an inspirational "Let Me Serenade You" that is a hot rocker and again a great Manchester vocal that shows Melissa is totally versatile and one of the greatest from her generation of great vocal artists plus being an accomplished singer/songwriter...haunting and glorious is the vocal on Brian Wilson's "The Warmth Of The Sun" which closes this magnificent set of great songs with peerless vocals! Melissa Manchester is so great a singer that she must have threatened many with that greatness and this is the only reason that I can find for her not being the Superstar Singer that she deserves to be...if you love great Singing then do not miss this extraordinary collection or her wonderful "Tribute" collection of incredible performances. Bravo Melissa!!!!!
Simply Singin'!.......2002-04-27
This 1977 Arista release was Melissa's 6th LP. After establishing her career as a singer/songwriter, Singin' was designed to showcase her vocal ability as well as the ability to interpret current songwriters' songs. The results were mixed by critics, but enbraced by most fans. There was only one song written by Melissa called "No Ones Ever Seen This Side Of Me". It was the B-side to the single "I Wanna Be Where You Are" (a Michael Jackson hit in '72 and written by Leon Ware and Diana Ross's brother T-boy Ross).
The direction of the music is a combination of light jazz, uptempo and ballads. Transfered to CD on this Japan release is superb! Packaging is genuine as the original release, with the addition of lyrics and a bio in Japanese.
Although most of the songs were played on A/C rock stations at the time, none of them became bonafide hits. Some of the most popular tracks were the John Miles ballad "Time" and Average White Bands' jazz ballad "A Love Of Your Own". She also delivers a rousing version of Sly & The Family Stone's "Stand", James Taylor ballad "You Make It Easy", Beach Boys' "Warmth Of The Sun" and Three Dog Night's playful hit "Let Me Serenade You". Another popular track is a slow jazz Wendy Waldman track "My Love Is Alll I Know". Last but not least is the opening track, "Sad Eyes", a surupy ballad that didn't quite move me.
Since there is still not too much of Melissa available on CD, this is definitely worth the investment.
