Would Somebody Please Answer The Phone? I Gotta Listen To This Again!!.......2006-02-05
Here in L.A., anyone who knows the scene on the Eastside of town knows that Mezklah is considered to be the next BIG thing. With the release of "Spider Monkey," they have proven why. The albumn mixes Spanish, English, and a nonsensical Reggaeton inflected vocal percussion with a seamless array of sounds. Arranger, singer Angel Garcia shows great talent in the versatility of both his songwriting and voice. The songs seem to travel the world as they pick up a variety of influences from Reggae, to Rock, to Cuban Son, to Arabian reeds, and yet they never seem to fit just one genre. Holding down this feast for the ears is a Drum & Bass beat that weaves in and out throughout the albumn, and the original guitar work of Gregorio Hernandez. Using his voice as an instrument at times, Garcia's vocal styles are vibrant, original, and filled with hooks. They seem to constantly hold suprises as he often employs synchopated phrasings. As if to keep up with the vocal athleticism of Garcia, guitarist Hernandez alternates between Latin guitar picking on tracks like "Chango Araña" and "Quiero Cocido," to ambiant textures on "Red Mud," to catchy Reggae grooves on "Fogata" and "Ojo de Agua," to psychedellic thunder on the title track. This is one of the most original and catchy debuts I've heard in years! Could it now be that Ozomatli and Los Lobos will have to pass the torch on to Mezklah?
