Although they vigorously deny the influence, Gene should by all rights be forwarding their royalty checks to the Smiths. The parallels are obvious: lithe, crooning, chiming chords and pretentious song titles. Even the album cover could easily serve as the artwork for a Morrissey B-sides collection. And that's exactly what the music sounds like--standard-issue dysfunctional British rock. But don't count them out just yet. Gene muster up enough melodic clarity on tracks such as "Sleep Well Tonight" and "Haunted by You" to threaten future greatness. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Excellent debut.......2005-10-10
moody english rock done right. yes yes yes...it sounds an awful lot like The Smiths, but by no means is Gene a copycat act. but their influence can be felt within these songs. this cd really sunk it's claws in me when i first heard it and i still love it to this day. Recommended!
Those Charming Men.......2005-06-03
Not a bad band by any means Gene, however, never did forge their own identity remaining basically a less inspired version of the Smiths even if "Olympian" wouldn't embarass Morrissey and Marr's album record had it been theirs. The title track,"Left Handed","To the City"and "Haunted by you"are the clear highlights.
Olympian- A being of lofty detachment..........2004-07-03
Gene's Olympain lives up to it's godly Greek title. Sleep Well Tonight is a haunting and sweetly sorrowful anthem that echoes early Morrissey. This is a wonderful album. It is one of the few titles in my collection that I can play nonstop from track one until the end. Martin Rossiter's voice is smooth and pure. It compliments the flowing and airy tunes of Steve Mason's guitar and the gentle steady rhythm provided by Matt James and Kevin Miles (drums and bass respectively). A moving and emotional album. If you are a fan of Morrissey and the like, this record is for you.
Essential Neo Classic.......2003-07-26
Gene's lyrics are ecstatically profound and well versed. "Car That Sped" was a great empowering song- " You got to do it on your own, I can't help you anymore..." "London, Can you wait?" reverberates echoes of great songwriting bands like The Smith and Suede.
I have listen to this CD over and over again. I have not gotten tired of it yet. Their words are still true today.
