Amazon.com Music Reviews

More than just a record, this is also the story of the journey of Paul Pena, a fine blind American bluesman who learned Tuvan throat singing well enough to win a contest in Tuva. His solo tracks, especially his take on Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues," are the real blues deal, but this record truly takes off when Pena and Ondar duet. The blues and the eerie, often-guttural sounds of throat singing make a natural match, one that simply bewitches with the clear overtones and melodies, while the guitar and Tuvan banjo offer simple, but very plaintive, accompaniment. About the only misstep is the inclusion of the Cape Verdean "Tras d'Orizao," which sticks out like a sore thumb from everything else. Get that out of your system, and the rest is pure magic. --Chris Nickson

Album Description

This wild musical journey combines the amazing two-note vocals of Tuvan throat-singing master ONDAR with the gut-bucket, scratchy blues of Paul "Earthquake" PENA, and a Cape Verdian morna ballad thrown in for good measure. <P>Music from this CD powers the award-winning film Genghis Blues.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment.......2007-05-14

I saw the documentary of Paul Pena's plight in trying to travel to Tuvan and the Throat-Singing competition he participated in.
Wonderful example of blue's tradion and Paul's wide range of vocals.

Ondal is a national treasure, keeping his peoples native music alive.

sad to hear that Paul died in 2005; lets play this music and remember him.

5 out of 5 stars Genghis Blues.......2006-01-31

I got the soundtrack after seeing the film of the same name which had come as a breath of fresh air.
It's great to hear some honest, uncontrived music performed by masters in their craft.
If you've ever doubted the concept of universality or interconnectedness then these guys of such different cultural and geographical origins could change your view.
There's a rare lot of heart in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting music from great artists.......2006-01-20

This music is almost certainly unlike anything else you've ever heard. The songs in this album are a rare treasure and document a beautiful art form. I also HIGHLY recommend the documentary DVD.

You will be missed, Paul.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful!.......2004-04-03

The music on this soundtrack is so beautiful and mesmerizing that it almost becomes haunting. From song one, this soundtrack takes you on a journey from America to Tuva and back again. A great addition to any music lover's library.
