The Nixon - self-titled (MCA).......2005-04-25
This is their second CD.Many of their fans would consider The Nixons to be one of the better alternative rock&roll bands to emerge on the scene when they did.Tunes that make this CD a keeper are "Baton Rouge","Miss USA","In Spite Of Herself" and "Leave".Line-up:Zac Maloy-guitar&vocals,Jesse Davis-guitar,Ricky Brooks-bass and Tye Robinson-drums.Might appeal to fans of Bush,Dropkick Murphys,Fury In The Slaughterhouse and possibly Seven Mary Three.
An Alternative MUST HAVE!.......2002-06-13
This cd is simply amazing! From the first track to the end, it's a wonderful emotional journey that will get you rockin in a heartbeat! If you thought "Foma" was good, this 1997 Self Title album defines the music of THE NIXONS. Fans of Stone Temple Pilots, Collective Soul, Seven Mary Three, Matchbox 20, and Brother Cane, should definitely give this disc a thorough listening to. I guarantee you will find several songs that appeal to you. From the Rockin' "...At The Sun" to the Soft "Shine" and "December", to the heavy grunge sounds of "Baton Rouge", "Butterfly", and the Nirvana- Esque "Leave". I give this very underated album and often overlooked, and underplayed a definitive 5 Stars for well crafted songs and musicianship. If I could describe this disc in one word it would be---SUPEREXCELLENT!
Different from "Foma", but good........2002-03-15
I had never even heard of this band until recently, but my friend recommended "Foma" to me, so I checked it out. I loved it man, it instantly became one of my favorite albums. So, I had to have more Nixons stuff, so I picked up this one while at the store. And, I am pleased.
This is definitely a lot different from the first album. It's more laid back and radio friendly. They sorta did the same thing as Candlebox. They toned down their music to fit in with the alternative rock that was so popular then. I was never a big fan of that stuff, I'm more of a grunge rock person, but I still think this is good music. The lyrics are more down to earth, and less thought-provoking, but still well-done. The musicians still play well, and Zac's vocals still rule. "Baton Rouge" is a good hard-rocking track to start everything off. "Sad Sad Me" is a cool, sort of reggae-ish song, and "December" is a beautiful ballad, probably my favorite song.
I really enjoyed this album. A few of the songs are not great, but there are some really good ones here. "The Latest Thing" sounds like kind of a sellout though, and I don't think I'll buy it (what's up with that cover?). I would really be interested to hear their new stuff with Hover though. It's supposed to be more like the "Foma" stuff. It wouldn't be the same without Zac, but oh well. A comeback's a comeback. Anyway, this is pretty good stuff, and recommended to alternative fans everywhere.
Good, nondescript rock.......2001-05-26
The Nixons, one of the more enjoyable bands that never made it big, never really stood out from the rest of the pack in the mid-90s rock scene. This album, which doesn't offer anything new or novel, won't change that. It's one large serving of vanilla medium-to-heavy rock; a lot of the songs sound more or less the same, but it's entertaining enough. A few of the tracks (In Spite of Herself, Sad Sad Me, Screaming Yellow, At the Sun) have an extra little element of catchyness that keep them in your head after the song is over; most of the rest of the tracks are nondescript enough that if you named one of them, I couldn't hum 5 notes of it (even now, after over a dozen rotations of the CD). The main weakness of the album would have to be its bland lyrics; they're pretty much exactly what you'd expect out of a middle-of-the-pack 90s rock band (December exemplifies this lyrical mediocrity well). I guess it sounds like I'm coming down kind of hard on the album; the funny thing is, even though it's not the kind of album you'll want to rush out and tell your friends about, it's still pretty enjoyable listening. To summarize, I'll say that if you like 90s hard rock, you'll probably like this CD--just don't expect it to rock your world.
