Customer Reviews:
Intelligent pop music is not an oxymoron.......1999-09-28
Much of what passes for popular music today is depressingly unexceptional. The music is derivative, and the lyrics are boilerplate doggerel. What a delight and surprise to find this CD. "Five Sticks" contains a dozen well-crafted and thoroughly entertaining songs, where the care taken in the writing and performing of these songs will reward the listener over and over. This is not a record you will get sick of after the tenth listening. It is rich with wit and cleverness, inventive but not so obtuse that it is either inaccesible or just too precious for its own good. There are funny songs like "7-11 of Lovin'," "When Good Things Happen to Bad People," and "It's a Guy Thing." There are sweet and lovely love songs like "I'll Take a Little," and "Talk Me Down." And then a song that is nothing short of arresting: "She Didn't Ask." It seems so simple on a casual listen, but its depth and complexity just opens up for you on a closer listen. The music is also exceptional. The guitar work is clean, witty, and inventive without being overbearing. If you want a CD that will take you down emotional paths besides agression or boredom, this is one you want to try.
Twelve songs, twelve clever and humorous tunes to love.......1999-09-23
Wow! It's not often that we get to here such powerfully crafted tunes that are married to such ingeniously clever and downright funny lyrics, but with Five Sticks we certainly do. The lyrics are a marvelously rhyming patchwork of everyday psychosocial problems and joys of life. The Tonewelders musicianship is just the right mix of quirky originality and familiar styles. Anyone can relate to these tunes because their about life's wobbles and perceptions. And, Glennon's lyrics are just about as idiosyncratically weird, but as friendly as you can get. Their like meeting an Erik Fromm with a Mr. Rogers delivery. Talk Me Down and She's Either are my favorites, but 7-11 of Lovin' is bound to be a hit. If you want originality vs. the same old processed to puree stuff, then buy this CD as soon as you can. The tunes will ride in your memory all day long, and that'll make you smile.
