Customer Reviews:
Excellent set.......2005-12-31
This set starts off with the third album titled ON THE DOUBLE cd from 1968 and continues thru every regular Dutch release up thru KEEPER OF THE FLAME 1989.
The regular cd's are: On the double...Eight miles high...Wall of dolls...Seven Tears...Together...Moontan...Switch...Contraband...Live 1977...Grab It For A Second...No Promises No Debts...Prisoner Of The Night...2nd Live..Cut...N.E.W.S....The Hole...They also included THE CONTINUING STORY OF RADAR LOVE (Which was a total waste of space and money...as it was just the same songs from the cd's) Also included was SOMETHING HEAVY GOING DOWN..which was basically just the same show they did on 2nd Live..plus the single track...something heavy goin down..
Now you might think you have all the GE cd's??..NOPE...you need to get a copy of the first 3 lp's. (Just Earrings..Winter Harvest and Miracle Mirror).. which is on a 2cd set entitled "3 Originals" this is a good buy and still available..it has all the songs from those 3 lp's plus all the singles and B-sides not included on those 3 lp's..and is REMASTERED!!! You'll be impressed with the mastering on these. You will also need to grab...BLOODY BUCCANEERS...Face It...LOVE SWEAT...Paradice In Distress...Milbrook USA.....doing this...you will have the complete cd set of studio and live cd's....
That STILL wont complete ALL the songs tho...as there are a list of 31 more songs that are not included on any cd that were either B-sides or unreleased tracks only available on compilation cd's...a few of these were only released on vinyl and never on CD..but with a little effort..you can find them all...just like I did....Good Luck and happy hunting..
Try visiting GOLDEN EARRING MUSEUM and post an interest in locating the tracks....some collectors will e-mail the sngs to you in a file...
I see that this set is now out of print and the scalpers are out to get rich quick.....Do yourself and your wallet a big favour...just buy the cd's off amazon that you need to complete the collection...you'll be way ahead
From On The Double to Keeper Of The Flame!.......2004-11-06
Golden Earring may not be the greatest band in the world but they have a number of amazing songs that those of us outisde of Holland are really missing out on. This collection may come with some sticker shock, but it's easy to see why. Here are the albums included:
On The Double
Eight Miles High
Golden Earring (AKA Wall Of Dolls)
Seven Tears
Together
Moontan
Switch
To The Hilt
Contraband (yuck, their worst non-60's album)
Live
Grab It For A Second
No Promises, No Debts
2nd Live
Prisoner Of The Night (Leser known, but one of the best)
Cut
NEWS
Something Heavy Going Down
The Hole
Keeper Of The Flame
Impressive, no? All of the band's greatest songs from On The Double to 1988's Keeper Of The Flame are here, including "Twilight Zone", "When The Lady Smiles", "Radar Love", "Quiet Eyes", and "Long Blond Animal".
The band has their fair share of duds, no doubt, and songs such as "This Is The Other Side Of Life", "Tons Of Time", "Violins", "To The Hilt", and some of the tracks on On The Double will prove this to you.
The best albums included here are Moontan, NEWS, Prisoner Of The Night, Cut, Something Heavy Going Down, The Hole, and Together. Live features some amazing guitar work but the To The Hilt/Contraband era songs aren't my thing. I'd much rather listen to the Cut/NEWS era songs performed live.
However, a lot of excellent songs were recorded from 1991 to their latest studio album released in 2003, and you're not going to find them here. The entire Bloody Buccaneers album is their best straight-up classic hard rock album that is a MUST for fans, and the two disc live album Last Blast Of The Century is also a must, as is Millbrook USA. You might even want to pick up Face It as well. Without these albums you're missing out on "Going To The Run", "Planet Blue", "Albino Moon", "Legalize Telepathy", "In A Bad Mood", "Pouring My Heart Out Again", and many more.
You're also missing out some great B-sides which you should hunt down, the best of which are:
Time Warp
King Dark
Holy Holy Life
Madame Zou Zou
Shadow Avenue
