Those whose familiarity with late former Temptation Ruffin's solo work extends only to the hits "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" and "Walk Away from Love" may be surprised to find about half these tracks, originally issued between 1969 and 1977, making a great case for his work after leaving Motown's greatest group. Ruffin's fervor and control are intact here, even when his producers are chasing someone else's sound, as on a cover of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "I Miss You." David Ritz's liner notes posit this period of Ruffin's career as unjustly overlooked; the above-mentioned smashes, along with tracks such as "World of Darkness" and "No Matter Where," make it hard to disagree. <I>--Rickey Wright</I>

This collection is enjoyable if you are a David Ruffin fan. I love My whole World Ended. Walk Away from Love ,and Statue of A Fool.Typical DR stuff. Love it.

The single "Walk Away From Love" is one of the best songs ever made. The lyrics are excellent, thought provoking and timeless. This song will never go out of style. The rhythm is smooth and also timeless. There are 3-4 other songs that I rate 2 stars, which makes this more than a one song CD.

I bought this cd several years ago after watching The Temptations movie but since then I've misplaced it. After seeing that movie I feel in love with the Temptations and David Ruffin all over again. I wanted and bought everything and anything that were the Temptations. I happened upon the Ultimate Collection cd by David and I also purchase Eddie Kendricks Ultimate Collection as well.

I too were surprised and pleased at the body of work that I, a fan, never knew about. "The Common Man" and "Statue of a Fool" and his rendition of The Bluenotes "I miss You" made my heart melt. I've found it on CDNOW and am purchasing it again.

I'm looking forward to many drives in my car with this AAA rated CD. If you haven't purchased it. It's a must have. I'm Lovin' David Ruffin.

David is best remembered as the lead singer of the Temptations, a group he fronted until 1968 to try out a solo career. It didn't produce the expected success and David eventually returned to the Temptations. This compilation focuses exclusively on his solo recordings, even excluding his duets with his brother Jimmy.

David had two American top ten hits (My whole world ended, Walk away from love) and several lesser American hits, all of which are included here. In Britain, David had just one hit, making the top ten with Walk away from love. A listen to this collection shows that David deserved to be much more successful.

Among the other tracks here is a cover of Statue of a fool. Originally recorded by country singer Jack Greene, Ricky Van Shelton revived it in the eighties. Both Jack and Ricky had major country hits with the song but David's R+B version is well worth a listen. I remember that many R+B singers covered country songs in the sixties and early seventies (following the example set by Ray Charles) but it was comparatively rare for Motown artists to do so. On the evidence of this track, perhaps they could have done more.

There are many other excellent tracks here. If you enjoy Motown music of the sixties and seventies, especially by the Temptations, you'll love this.
