Customer Reviews:
A nice collection of songs.......2005-02-20
This is Phish's 4th studio album (not including Junta). It consists of mostly shorter songs (2 to 5 minutes long). Except for the last track, there is no jamming. The CD is 46 minutes long.
There are some very nice songs on this albums, like Julius, Sample In a Jar, Down With Disease and If I Could. There are some songs, like Wolfman's Brother, that are much better here, than done live (and I am a huge fan live music). These songs are well arranged and produced, with guest musicians and background singers. The horns on Wolfman's Brother make it a fun song.
There are some songs, like Dog-Faced Boy and Scent of A Mule that just throw away little ditties. It is because of these songs, and that there is only about 30 minutes of really good stuff that I give this CD only 3 stars. It might be close to 4 stars.
Hoist.......2005-02-03
Hoist is deffinately a must have album. I's gotta be their most fun album to listen to. The songs are catchy not poppy like some people might insist. Its got a nice range of musical styles from the classic jamming, to horn sections and etc. All the guest musicians and backup vocalists are a great touch. All in all one of my favorites by phish.
Down with "Hoist"?.......2004-08-04
Alot of people complain that "Hoist" includes too much pop-rock, and not enough jam, but my complaint is that it just doesn't flow well. Don't get me wrong, musically it's impressive, and there's some really good stuff on here, but front to back it doesn't hold up like those before it, or since. There's a few catchy upbeat tracks like "Down With Disease", "Sample In A Jar", and "Wolfman's Brother", and there's a few pretty and mellow songs like "Dog-Faced Boy", "If I Could", and "Lifeboy", but some of the remaining tracks border on annoying. Obviously this is still good, and it's a must for fanatics, but newcomers should get another disc first. One thing that I do really love about "Hoist" though, is that it's a cool word to say.
Perfect.......2004-06-04
I adore this CD and don't hold back just to save some money. This is an exceptional masterpiece done by none other than the best band that ever was and ever will be...Phish. I couldn't be happier that I got it however long ago I got it, and it truly is amazing.
Jam packed with good songs.......2004-02-28
Phish have established themselves by this point, with Junta, A Picture of Nectar, and Rift, three classic albums. Now they come up with a coherent album demonstrating a keen pop sense following the deranged creativity of Rift. "Julius" is pure fun, and Phish shows us they can do a song that resembles a spiritual number. "Axilla" is rockin', and "Lifeboy" is insightful. "Sample in a Jar" is classic, as well as "Wolfman's Brother." They are two of the most popular Phish songs on the same album. "Scent of a Mule" also ranks up there as a favorite Phish song among the listening public.
