Customer Reviews:
Not yet over the moon.......2001-12-25
I disagree with all the reviews posted about this album. It certainly is not some of the best
guitar music committed to CD, let alone is it totally totally terrible. It's a workmanlike and solid,
albeit, derivative set from this American band. In fact, are they all American, because the singer
sounds very British indeed.
Best track by far is the opener 'Nightmare At Noon', very 60s British pop with a gorgeous
melody line and guitar playing. The rest doesn't really match up, and it is not an album I would
return to regularly. It does its job, and thats about it.
I agree with Undermars.......2000-05-18
After reading the glowing reviews of this record, I immediately went out and bought a copy. I couldn't wait to pop it in and be blown away. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that I agree with Undermars' synopsis. The reviews before his are obviously from friends of the band or maybe even the BANDMEMBERS THEMSELVES. Not to say that it is terrible, but it is terrible. I wouldn't say quit your day jobs but I would say that working part-time probably isn't a bad idea.
The entire album.......2000-03-24
I am really surprised that 6 people would like this CD. It is of poor quality and shows no artist talent. Tell these guys to keep their day job.... I kind of makes you wonder if the people involved with the reviews are somehow connected with the band! HMMMM...? The test of time will show!
A total surprise - this is an amazing piece of work........1999-10-21
I don't know who these guys are or where they came from, but this album is an amazing piece of work. The vocals on this disc just blew me away - both the lead performances and the harmonies. But the real testament to the fact that I have no doubt Overmars will be around for a long time is the songwriting. The album begins with a haunting tune, "Nightmare at Noon," balancing intricate chord changes with an effective and stunning cello overdub, and goes immediately into this Zep/Beatles/JC/Sinatra song called "Black Wheel," which is the song I heard on the radio. Best song I've heard in 10 years - up there with Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." But then you still have "BBC Radio," "Always Down," "Burnt" and "Volcano" still to come. "BBC Radio" is a total standout too - awesome changes and vocal structure...I've been singing it since the day I got the disc. The guitars are thick and complex - an excellent recording. If Overmars ever makes it out to the west coast, I will be the first one in line to see them. Brendan Feeney, the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter, also apparently co-produced this project, and he is a wizard. Brendan, if you make it out here, I'm buying you a beer, and not one of those lame ones either - a nice Oatmeal Stout. I can't wait for the next album already...
