There's a distinct ignore-the-elephant-in-the-room irony to the very idea of a punk jubilee. The whole punk ethos once dictated that bands like the Vibrators weren't supposed to outlive Van Halen and release 25th anniversary live homages to themselves. But whether the notion of a 40-something Vibrators is more or less palatable than a 40-something David Lee Roth, this recording of the band's Cinco de Mayo 2000 set at New York's punk shrine CBGB's is undeniably blistering, if punctuated with strangely nostalgic cries of "1977!" The trio incarnation (Ian "Knox" Carnochan, drummer Eddie, and bassist Robbie Tart) of the band further focuses the energy as they careen with Ramones-like fury through much this show's 21-songs-in-under-an-hour set. Vintage '70s cuts like "Yeah Yeah Yeah," "Baby, Baby," "Judy Says," and "Disco Mosco" are seasoned with cuts from throughout their career, ample proof of the band's elemental consistency. But it's not all buzz-saw and sweat, as the neo-Music Hall, electric-chair-themed sing-along "Juice On" proves. If the original knock on the Vibrators was that they were careerists, this album will dissuade few from their professionalism--or stubborn sense of timelessness. --Jerry McCulley
