Customer Reviews:
They don't make 'em like this anymore.......2004-07-21
I ordered this CD really wanting the Dolores Gray LP. I was a little disappointed that all the Gray tracks were ballads. She had such a powerhouse voice; I wish she had recorded with a rollicking big band like Billy May's or Nelson Riddle's. But I was still thrilled to have it. The surprise was the June Hutton LP. I enjoyed it much more than I had expected. The Pied Pipers must have been an excellent training ground, for June and the Boys work here recalls the best of the Modernaires, or most of all, Jo Stafford with the Pipers or husband Paul Weston's Starlighters in her Columbia years. If you're a fan of '40's/'50's standards, and you like vocal harmony, the Hutton LP is a must-have.
Oh, it's a GRAY day!.......2002-06-30
This isn't an easy disc to get ahold of but, whatever it takes, it's worth it. Both singers are superb and the songs and orchestrations just pour over you. Dolores Gray's rich, supple, astounding voice -- imagine a cello, a snifter of warm brandy, hot honey -- is for the ages. She makes contemporary "sexpots" like Britney or J-Lo sound like nasal, narcissistic brats and leaves them in the dust. This is very good stuff. Enjoy!
Smooth Pleasure.......2000-02-17
This is the type of music to dream by. First heard it in a B & B in Edinburgh, Scotland and had to have it. Get a warm drink, sit back and enjoy it.
This one can really tug at your heartstrings!.......1999-07-13
If you liked the Pied Pipers......you'll adore this. June Hutton and "The Boys Next Door> <AKA The Boys of The Pied Pipers> perform in a magnificent manner. I program a radio station in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and I play everyone of these tracks. Also another good set by this group is a CD recording from England with Skip Martin's orchestra. Most cuts are for the Standard Transcription library. "What a Deal" can bring me to tears!

June Hutton was one of the great singers, unrecognized........1999-05-10
June Hutton -- wife (and widow) of Axel Stordahl -- was one of the unrecognized singers of the forties and fifties.
She was lead singer of The Pied Pipers -- replacing Jo Stafford. It was her voice that you heard in the Pipers' blockbuster "Dream". On this album -- originally titled "Afterglow" (circa 1955) -- husband Axel Stordahl put together a group -- called "The Boys Next Door" -- who, together with Junie, makes the songs sound almost like Pied Pipers recordings.
Every song on the album is a winner -- from "Day By Day" and "I Should Care" (both written by Axel Stordahl and Paul Weston) to such standards as "East Of The Sun" and "I Hadn't Anyone Till You".
