Customer Reviews:
I know what happened to them.......2005-02-10
The Semibeings went back to the studio for their third album , "The Semibeings Are Bums" which was to be released on the cz label, but it never was released due to the break up of the band. You can find this album at weedfiles.com. I think they felt the band had just run its course and you are right, they never received the recognition they deserved. Their live performances were out of this world. You can find Keith in a rock/pop outfit named The Commons. I have no information on the whereabouts of the great Joe Baker.

I don't feel like a man and I don't feel like a woman..........2004-05-30
The Semibeings were an underground band that existed in the 90's...I'm not sure what happened to them, but I have only found this album and 2 others on Seattle's C/Z records... I have heard that members of this band were working with Ween's producer Andrew Weiss, but I have not found any mention of it as yet, so it's a mystery. (If anyone should know, let me know!)
This is one of those albums that barely anyone (besides avid psychedelic/avante garde ethusiasts like myself)has heard or heard of for that matter. The Semibeings would have to be the best kept secret of 90's alternative rock.
The first song is "I'm a Man"...not the Bo Diddley classic, but a new interpretation in lyrical terms of the question of what exactly makes a man. The songs writer Joe Baker addresses for the first time in song man's basic insecurity of size in regard to private parts. While women can be insecure by breast size, Baker is the first one to come clean on the man's side in that, yes, alot of us do worry if we are big enough to satisfy and in general the song addresses the problems of particularly some modern day men, and really women as well. The way I take it is, the way the working class society (The Semibeings come from this) say what makes a real man, is many times at odds with the actual reality of the experience. So, since compared to the well endowed male porn actors, many men pale in comparison, and since it can seem to the adolescent male (The Semibeings were in their early 20's) that most women would want no less, thus they don't feel manly, yet they don't feel like a woman either, so what are they then? An alien? Something inbetween, a semi-being? By the end Baker gives hope but asserting "I'm a man, yours." In essence when you find love from the other, it enables you to be what you are, be it man or woman, straight or gay.
Another song I identify with is "I'm a film". When you spend a great portion of your life watching movies and TV, you tend to think your life is one too. There's a little more under the surface though...Joe Baker, again the writer on this one sings "We lay down, I see it in the movies. We move around I saw that film...When I'm with you I feel so real, you know, it's just that sometimes I can't feel original. Sometimes I feel like I'm in some porno, sometimes I feel so very low." From my interpretation, when everyone is raised on pornograpy or at the very least a highly sexualized media, sometimes it is hard to tell yourself apart from the film. How can you really be yourself and express yourself when having sex when you have seen all those same motions before time and time again? The downside of identifying yourself with a character in a film...If your friends help you out at christmas you might flash that you are George Bailey from all those re runsof "It's a wonderful Life"...at the same time if in the actof having sex,it's not such a stretch to flash that your a sleazy greasy porn star from all those porns you have seen growing up.
