5 out of 5 stars overlooked.......2004-11-20

This is one of the most overlooked albums of the sixties. beatles quality with no air time. just goes to show that marketing sometimes wins over art. a must have for anyone who plays music.....unless you prefer marketing?

5 out of 5 stars Wit and Music not subpar.......2004-10-10

This is one of the greatest albums of all time. The musical arrangements are brilliant. The lyrics are cheeky and often play upon each other. Great for sipping wine and watching the sun set before bed.

cheers

4 out of 5 stars La alegre locura de Giles, Giles & Fripp, antes de Crimson.......2004-04-05

5 out of 5 stars The Creative Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp.......2003-03-29

Well, I got this when the cd version first came out. I had been listening to Crimso' for years and have always prefered the early lineups over the later ones.

While this is not heavy or powerful it is overflowing with creativity and talent. Only a few cuts contain distorted guitar, but Fripp's playing and picking style is sublime. Michael Giles skill on the drumkit is worldclass and totally unique, his crisp snare and cymbal work is fantastic. Michael also does the vocals in a lovely, quintessential English style. And Pete Giles' bass playing is smooth, round and very musical.
The Giles brothers started young and by this time had already been playing together for years, their playing just sounds so natural and effortless.

Listening to this and the first two Crimson albums confirms that Michael Giles is one of my all-time favorite drummers and I'd love to get a chance to play with him. (BTW-He just released a new solo recording, havn't heard it yet)

There are some bits and pieces that may have been better left of the original album. The odd, wacky Pythonesque humor would be more effective had it been more focused and consistent.

The overall musicality is really of high standard. You'll recognise certain melodic swoops that further blossomed on the following Crimson albums.

Some of the better songs come towards the end of the disc...Erudite Eyes, and She is loaded.

Maybe is doen't merit a full five stars, but if you get what's going on here then you'll realise this was a unique project of some young and talented players.
I really don't view this as a buildup to Crimson as much as just a different (and now) fresh sounding project.

3 out of 5 stars Insanity is 9/10 of the solution.......2003-03-27

Well...it's pretty far from King Crimson but you can see the seeds that eventually blossomed into the great Crim monster. It's not a masterpiece but some of Peter Giles whimsical songs are pretty good. Clearly his inspiration in some cases was Ray Davies (particularly the material from Something Else by The Kinks).

The highlights outweigh the weaker moments. This edition has four bonus tracks of particular interest to early Crim fans; She is Loaded features Ian McDonald on saxes and vocals (he contributed the vocal arrangement as well). Under the Sky (credited to Fripp but written by McDonald-Sinfield)is the first evidence of the fruitful McDonald-Sinfield songwriting partnership. Ian sings lead vocals and, again, plays assorted instruments. He also did the arrangements. Thursday Morning is a re-recorded version of the album track (in mono and stereo)that features, again, McDonald on woodwind instruments and some minor changes to the vocal arrangement courtesy of McDonald.
