Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I totally agree with the other reviews - this IS a wonderful CD!!!.......2005-08-15

The other 2 reviews say it so well. He was great!

Discovered by Marty Wilde (another Elvis type in England) & introduced to his manager, Larry Parnes, who immediately signed him to his stable.

My brother saw him play in the clubs in London in the late 50's/early 60's & related to this (then) pre-teen the excitement of Fury's act. Like many Elvis wannabes in the US, Billy was one of those in England. However, he was so much more!

OK, the cover shows him wearing his famous gold suit, bought in homage to his idol & Presley's famous LP cover. Inside the leaflet is a photo of him & Presley in '62 - the King meets the (English) Prince!

He was, however, not only the best of the English Rock and Rollers, but also the most original - even writing most all of the material on this CD (if not under his own name then under his pseudonym "Wilbur Wilberforce"). This was at a time when most American singers recorded songwriters' material (& their Enlgish counterparts recorded watered down versions of those.

After hearing my siblings' singles, I was so pleased to see a new copy of this, his first album (on a 10 inch LP - remember those!?)on a market stall in London in much later in the late '70's. This originally reached # 18 on the charts in England, when released around 1960.

After technology dictated an upgrade in my playing music (records to CDs) I was even more pleased when I eventually saw this CD - with 10 bonus tracks to boot!!!!!

The sleeve gives a small history of Billy (+ a great shot of him on a British twin riding on a country road there! (a Matchless? - certainly not a more common Triumph or BSA).

Billy's stage act, like Preseley's, received a lot of flak for its (then) overly sexual nature. He toned it down (partly at his parents' request, partly due to the changes such was dictated by the wanining popularity of Rockabilly). He wasn't the only one to do this (Clifff Richard, Tommy Steel, Joe Brown). Heck, even the Beatles ditched their leather jackets/ greasy hair as Epstein packaged them for mass acceptance.

This, his first album, shows an incredible talent, a wide variety of music (perhaps more like Buddy Holly's work than Presley's) and a lasting legacy of great misuc.

Certainly England's greatest album of this era!!!!!It's a shame Billy Fury is not more weel known in The US.

If you can ever track one down, then I certainly recommend you buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest British Rock & Rockerbilly Album.......1999-08-23

A forgotten legend remembered from The Sound of Fury, the greatest ever British Rock & Roll album. The Beatles approached Billy asking to be his backing band - listen to this and you will understand why. (Billy turned them down as too scruffy and wild!!)
