Travoltas

I only knew the Travoltas from some songs and small hits (the awesome "Waimea") in the Netherlands and found this CD for $2 in a store. But it's worth more than that.

Granted, the Travoltas are not original. Their music sounds like Green Day, Weezer, the Offspring, Goodbye Charlotte but with a little Beach Boys chorusses thrown in. The 60's feature much in the music anyway. Some of the choruses and verses could have been in a 60s pop tune, but now with nowadays rock instrumentation. The synthesizes is a great added touch. One thing that has to be said in favor of them is that they don't sound at all like a continental European band.

Highlights are the opening song 'Sugarride' and 'Do It Again' and 'Break Out' with a cool intro that will stick.

It could have done without the immensely long 'dreams' which is 7 and a half minutes but features about 3 minutes of sound effects. Maybe as a final track it would have worked but now it hinders the overall listening experience.
'Last Thing in the world' opens with a horrible rap/hip-hop synthesizer and doesn't get any better. It does get better as the song progresses.

Even though they try to have varied songs it doesn't really work, the aforementioned "Dreams" but also "Song for the Jetset" are almost too pretentious. They are great as a punkrock/surfpunk band but once they try to sound too serious it also gets more boring, these songs just go on and on and on.

If you have heard of the Travoltas before the CD might be worth the high price, otherwise leave it alone.
