3 out of 5 stars Grade C.......2003-12-25

This cd was a big let down after two great cds (AQUA, ARIA) with new lead singer John Payne. The songs tend to have a less classic Asia feel to them and a more eastern music feel to them. They tried to update their sound, to less than great results. There are some good songs with INTO THE ARENA & ARENA, being the best. TWO SIDES OF THE MOON, & THE DAY BEFORE THE WAR, are good also, but rest of the cd is below what Asia is capable of doing. It's not that songs are bad, it's just they are plain, nothing stands out about them, and make you want to listen to them.

2 out of 5 stars A Big Disappoinment!.......2003-05-27

...I can't listen to this album many times because there are so many awful songs. An opening track is instrumental song, which tells you a lot of this album. Arena, Bella Nova, Never and Falling are something horrible what I couldn't believe in Asia ever make. Arena is Asia's worst album! There are only a few good songs etc. The Day Before The War and Heaven. Asia has lost its creative powers and Downes/Payne has made something what I couldn't wait in Wildest Dreams. Forget this album.

4 out of 5 stars Asia goes latin.......2002-10-11

Asia with John Payne on vocals is a different animal to the '80's supergroup it started out as. Geoff Downes' keys are as prominent as ever, but Payne has a more raw voice (my wife thinks he sounds like Rick Astley with laryngitis...), and there is a stronger pop element to the songs overall.

Arena is an interesting album in that the band seem to have been bitten by a latin bug, and Santana-ish rhythms are evident throughout the CD. Overall there is a good mix of slow, mid and uptempo numbers (something the latest release Aura has been criticised for - too one-dimensional), the musicianship is excellent as is the production, and Elliot Randall is an interesting change to the lead guitar slot. He's no virtuoso, but his solos are kind on the ear without being too demanding. Aziz Ibrahim, the rhythm player, gets a couple of lead spots, in the most "prog" numbers (and he co-wrote one as well), and he's actually excellent - fast and fluid, superb technique, shame they insist on using "name" guitarists instead of going for talent.
A worthwhile addition to my collection

5 out of 5 stars New lead singer+renewed sound=Excellent CD!.......2002-08-05

This is Asia's third album with lead singer and bassist, John Payne who joined the group in 1992 with the release of Aqua.
The only remaining original member of the 80's supergroup is keyboardist and co-founding member, Geoff Downes.
Members of old will not be dissapointed. Actually they might be quite surprised by the well written and greatly arranged songs by Payne and Downes. It is evident listening to the new line-up that Downes and Payne have kept the spirit of the band alive and have actually taken Asia to a new level of musical greatness.
