Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beck still shines through. .......2003-09-13

Yes, I must agree that the vocals are a little lacklustre. Carmen Appice sounded better in Vanilla Fudge than with this trio. But I remember buying this one when it first came out on vinyl (in 1973) and it sounds superb on that format.
It was a far more commercial, less adventurous effort than most of Jeffs previous albums and sounds very 'pop-ish' in places, BUT nevertheless Jeff Becks guitar work shines through impressively.
The stand out track for me is the last one mainly because his slide guitar work on the Curtis Mayfields beautiful classic "I'm So Proud' is totally enchanting and dreamy. Becks guitar can be violently explosive but also very lyrical. Everywhere on this album there are lightning -fast licks placed in strategic points. No long instrumentals however on this album which is a shame because that would've cut out some of the vocals. "Superstition" was written by Stevie Wonder with Jeff in mind and
it's probably the track most would highlight.
"Lady" "Why should I care about you now?" "Lose Myself with You" all contain some mind boggling licks.
Jeff's musicianship never fails to impress even under commercial circumstances.I know he himself is rather embarrassed about this recording, but it's still worth getting just for in order to chart Jeff Becks career.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Raw Music.......2000-04-27

Those who criticize the vocals are missing the real genius of this group of musicians. The raw energy of the musical instrument talent more than makes up for the perceived lack of vocal quality. As the saying goes "You had to have been there".

3 out of 5 stars Why didn't they find a real singer?.......2000-02-19

All the other reviews here seem to be to the extremes, so allow me to take the middle ground. This album is okay. The musicianship is, of course, excellent--I love listening to Beck play and Bogert and Appice are a nice rhythm section. However, the songwriting is a bit lacking. The best songs are "Black Cat Moan" which reminds me of Guns-N-Roses, "Lady" which surprisingly appeared in the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" movie, and the metallic demolition version of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Most of the rest is so so at best. Okay, "Sweet Surrender" is kinda pretty.

The real problem is that none of these guys could sing. I'm not sure who handles the vocals on these songs (although I'm pretty sure it's not Beck since I've heard his "singing" on "Flash"), but they are mostly very bad. A real vocalist would have helped this album out tremendously.
