Customer Reviews:
Status Quo Fans Beware!!.......2004-08-01
These are arguably two of Status Quo's best albums; and with both albums on one cd you would think this release is a can't miss. I have all the albums on vinyl, so I wanted to get the cd to play in my car. Anyone who is familiar with the intros to "Backwater" & "Slowtrain" or the lead guitar break in "Mystery Song" know why these songs are essential driving music! So hands down, no brainer 5 star rating for the music. So why do I only give this release a 3 star rating? The sound quality. The songs sound like they were transfered from a third or fourth generation tape straight to cd. Remastered? Hardly, these songs have been "demastered" for this release. There is noticable tape hiss, most evident (and annoying) during the intro to "Blue For You". The high end sounds (mainly John Coghlan's cymbals) on many of the songs seem to warble & flutter. Lancaster's bass seems to be somewhat muffled too. I cranked up the old vinyl lps and despite the occasional click and pop, the overall sound was much better than this cd. So an absolute one star for the sound, hence my 3 star "average" rating.
Am I being a little nit picky? Maybe, but Status Quo and these albums deserve better treatment than this. If music fans are going to shell out of 20 plus bucks for a single cd, they expect and should get the best sound quality possible.
Regretfully, if you want these two great albums in the cd format, this release is your only option. The albums are not available anywhere else (that I know of) on cd. So for all you Quo fans out there planning to shelve their vinyl copies of "Quo" & "Blue For You", you gotta get this and overlook the "sonic" flaws.
But, don't be to hasty putting your vinyl copy of "Quo" in long term storage. You may get the urge to put the old needle down on the beginning of side one and maximize the volume sooner than you think.
blue for you : much underrated.......2004-04-30
Blue for for you is one of the best rock albums of the 70's for those who like the genre - Listen to this incredibly underrated song "That's a fact" (better in your car! or full power at home!), which is never cited by any fan nor played by the band.
Is there a better way?.......2003-02-12
Status Quo are a musical joke to a lot of people. Why? Because they haven't changed that much over the years according to those who "hate" them, and besides, they're not cool or hip, and they seem to not have any fan under the age of 30. Well, some of these things are true, but in the mid 1970's Status Quo were huge (at least in Europe) with their musical style that was sort of a boogie version of bands like Nazareth and Slade. They were no geeks then...
This CD release contain two LP's, namely "Quo" from 1974, and "Blue for you" from 1976. On the former "Quo" you will certainly not hear anything like the sickly-sweet "Marguerita time" because here you get a hard rocking band, and "Quo" is probably the guys hardest and heaviest release ever. When I listen to this album I tend to think a bit of Lenny Kravitz's "Are you gonna go my way". Not that you'll find a copy of that song but the structure and approach is somewhat similar. Many of the songs are interesting, like the frantic drum driven "Just take me", the bluesy "Break the rules", the hard rocking pairs "Drifting away" and "Don't think it matters", the country rock inspired "Fine fine fine". This is a great example of good rock in the 1970's.
The other part of the CD is "Blue for you", an album that isn't quite as hard rocking. By 1976 Status Quo had more or less found the sound and songwriting style they're most famous for. But the opening song "Is there a better way" is absolutely a hard rocker. "Mad about the boy", "Ring of change" and "Rolling home" (not the same "Rolling home" Status Quo recorded several years later) are all typical Status Quo numbers following the groovy boogie rock we got used to over the years. The title track "Blue for you" is a pleasant laid back blues inspired song while in "Rain", the band lean more towards the heavier approach featured on "Quo". "Ease your mind" is the albums most light hearted number in (lack of better comparison) Cliff Richard style (remember "Living doll"?). The closing track "Mystery song" is a long time fan favourite, with the capacity to blow the roof off the arenas Status Quo had the privilege to tour back in the old happy days.
"Quo" and "Blue for you" are two of Status Quo's best albums. If you're curious about this very under rated and often "laughed at" band, this is a good start to begin your exploring journey to the musical land of hard rocking boogie. Enjoy!
Tripped down memory lane.......2003-02-10
Blue for you was one of my least played records until I heard Mystery Song played on the radio. After hearing it I slapped on the disc and wore the grooves out.
