Not quite there.......2000-01-28
I'd describe it as "competent". It washes by but doesn't engage my attention much. There are no gasps of surprise on first listening, and no eagerly awaited moments on subsequent listenings. Its a pleasant-sounding recording, Torn's influence is subtly obvious, which you might think is a contradition, but is not.
If you're expecting a Torn-alike, forget it, Robby Aceto has his own voice. You're going to have to enjoy the album for what it is.
What it is.
A nicely produced debut recording from a guitarist influenced by David Torn. His guitar sounds are somehow less interesting than those of Torn although the methods for recording are probably very similar. Guitar distortion is less appealing from Aceto than it is from Torn (to my ears, at least) because it is more agressive and abrasive.
The more atmospheric tunes/songs also tend to meander in a way that Sylvian, Torn, Fripp & co all seem to avoid. With more reflective music there is a much finer touch needed to supply that "edge" that will make people want to come back to the music again and again.
But its a good debut album.
