3 out of 5 stars Crafts.......2005-02-22

Never let it be said that Kitty Craft doesn't make pretty music. That is, if you don't mind your prettiness smeared in glitter and sparkling with trippy beats. It has some charming musical moments, but it sounds and feels as light as air, and is about as substantial.

The opening song, "Comeback Queen," shows what the album is all about -- simple beats, watery trip-hop and airy female vocals. It's a pretty, trippy little song that never goes much of anywhere, but is something soothing to the nerves of people who listen to it. Just don't listen to it after any heavier music (Nirvana, for example) or you'll go into sugar shock.

The songs that follow are mostly in the same vein -- here and there Pamela Valfer spices up her songs with strings, R&B beats, and some truly exquisite harmonies in "My Head Falls Softly." The title track is one of the few that breaks from the mold -- it's sort of R&B on a glitter-girl trip, with sparkly melodies and sharp percussion.

It's not really worth trying to tell most of the songs apart -- except for a few quirks that Valfer throws in, they sound mostly the same. By the time she's singing "How... long... can this go on?", it's faded into a warm'n'fuzzy blur. Not that it's unpleasant, although at times all the floaty pop melodies can become a bit much.

One thing you can't say about Valfer: she isn't a bad mixer. The floaty strings, bouncy percussion and mellow keyboard sampling all blend together seamlessly. The twinkly bells and sparkly synth can get a bit nauseating at times, but Valfer does stray from that sound to either some swooning shoegazer pop, or some mildly rockin' percussion.

Sort of a trippier one-woman Polyphonic Spree, "Catskills" is light indiepop fluff, but at least it's pleasant (if a bit sugary). Think of it as the musical equivalent of cotton candy -- sweet, lightweight, and pleasant while it lasts.

4 out of 5 stars Scrumptious.......2001-01-16

Why do some bands feel the need to mislead people with titles that don't sound anything like their music? I don't know, and neither does Ms. Valfer. Music doesn't get much more cutesy than this and "Kitty Craft" pretty much sums it up. Very sample based, the beats being the high point of each track, layered with teenage, pig-tail haired vocals. Almost every track *feels* like a song about a crush, though it's often difficult to tell what she's singing about. The first track actually starts out just like the big Moby hit ("Porcelain", I think). Gorgeous, groovy, daydreamy girl-pop.
