3 out of 5 stars Solid Power Pop effort.......2003-07-29

Toothpaste 2000 play up-beat, distinctive power pop, featuring alternating male/female vocals and refreshing arrangements. The arrangements and the energetic performances keep interest high throughout this CD. The songs are reasonably catchy, and more importantly, consistently so. There's really only two things that keep this from being a 5 star classic. First and foremost, the lo-fi production does not quite suit the material. While effective sporadically, the vocals especially suffer over the course of the CD, sounding harsh and digital when they should be warm and natural. Secondly, while there are a bunch of quality tunes here, I'm not hearing any singles, or even tracks that particularly stand out as meriting repeated listening.

In an interesting move, the odd numbered tracks feature male lead vocals, while the even numbered tracks feature female lead vox. There is one track that features both, and it's one of my favorites. Featuring both vocals on more tracks may have helped distinguish one from the next.
